  • Do most people use this to mostly do legal things? or mostly illegal?

    • +5

You use it to download linux distributions at 100mbit :)

Nothing beats coming home after work and finding your favourite Linux distributions have already downloaded so you can just sit down and enjoy them on the couch.

      • Well, Ive heard that some people download -
Things to assist their motivational identities
        Amusing vidio clips
        Pure organic recopies,
        and lots of other stuff.
But that's only what I've heard.
Anyway, according to the first rule of usenet…well, I cant say.

        • Good one

    • +5

havent you seen mission impossible. its for communicating with people using cryptic bible verses

    • -3

i assume your one of does bandwagon, new world order sheep's.

what do you mean by illegal, can you be more specific, Special Police forces are gonna be at your door for downloading a free movie, song. RUN!!! burn the whole house down before they come! destroy the evidence!!!

i have 0% remorse for downloading Hollywood content for free, 0%! i never heard any of them going broke or starving coz of massive free downloading, dont worry for them, they are all sleeping safe and sound tucked in warm beds.

      • true, but I think it's a bit immoral for other people to make money off of their work.

  • "Unlimited
    for
    $200.00 $72.00
    MONTHLY"

    • Yup saw that too but it seems to be a typo. The text clearly states it's yearly i.e. $6 a month

    • It actually says $6 per month to the right of that. Poorly worded, but looks like you get charged monthly.

  • +2

Better off with some like tweaknews who is approx $62 for a full year. Can get it even cheaper by only signing up for one month and then accepting one of their email renewal discounts they always offer when your subscribtion expires. Sorry can't remember the discount amount but may be around 20%

Not only are Tweaknews cheaper they are generally better then the US providers. I moved away from block accounts including NGD and Astra to tweaknews and never looked back

    • +1

Tweaknews is very slow, not that good as a main account, better as a backup.

      • +1

Slow? Really? The 10Mbit maxes out my ADSL2 connection. Honestly this is not much of an achievement @ 450kb/s.

However, when I was on Bigpond cable (which was up until 3 months ago I was hitting around 3.2Mb/s. I don't consider this slow by any stretch. With torrents I would never be able to reach half this speed no matter how many seeds/peers

        • 3.2 Mb/s is slow ;)

I'm also on Bigpond Cable and like things to go a lot faster.

        • I would have to agree with 4gate that tweaknews yearly subscrition could be a better deal for some who are on ADSL 2+ or Off net (NBN users …not really sure because I don't have it).

But there are some shortcomings -

As a block user for tweaknews (discount codes are emailed regularly) I have noticed them to be really sluggish at times e.g. 300-400kbps especially if the file is a bit old.

Anyhow you still can get the best mix out of the two groups:-

          a) Have Tweaknews on yearly 10mbit subscription and a block from NGD or others as backup. Though it is very rare that block (file) is not available on tweaknews eu but available on NGD.

          b) Have a yearly subscription of NGD and a block of tweaknews - works for me (personal opinion so please don't flame me).

    • So does tweaknews actually have popular files? Astra became pointless

      • Seriously? I have an Astra account through Internode, and use Tweaknews as a backup. I've taken 1GB off the Tweaknews block account in the last 6 months.

Most problems with files nowadays are easily solved by using Quickpar.

I'm not quite sure what you mean as any downloads you make are not necessary store on your providers servers. The files are store on the provider whom the creator uploaded the file to. Majority of files I download would never be stored with tweaknews. They make be stored on servers like astraweb but I use Tweaknews to download them

        • Don't think you realise how usenet works. When a file is uploaded to a particular host, let's say TweakNews, it is then propagated to other usenet providers (Astraweb, NGD etc) and vice versa.. This can sometimes be within a few minutes or maybe a few hours.

The advantage that TweakNews has over the US based providers is in regard to DMCA takedown notices, as TweakNews seems to take much longer to action these.

    • +2

I'd certainly recommend tweaknews over NGD also.

I recently took their free 10-day trial and at the end was offered:

      €9.95 (down from €13.37) for 10Mbit unlimited, 10 threads, 3 months access
      €17.95 (down from €22.95) for 50Mbit unlimited, 30 threads, 3 months access
€11 (down from €30) for 250GB block (100Mbit), no expiry

      • +1

Would recommend the 250GB block. Have noticed that the discount options doesn't change and you can reuse the link a number of times. I have done this 2 times already.

      • There is a good point. They have a free trial account. Test it out before committing to 12 months with someone else.

Thanks for posting up some of the discounted rates. As I never kept my email. However, one is due tomorrow as my subscription ends today

  • what is the speed you are getting for this?
I use usenetbucket and for $5 a month, I get
unlimited data, 25 connections, and 40Mbit.

  • IS usenet worth trying out? These ways of transfering data have always seemed like a GAME to me. OF course, that might be because I'm computer illiterate, but everyone is king of their own THRONES i suppose. ON the subject, is there many things to download on USENET?

    • +2

      Yes

    • +1

      Yes :-)

      Edit - beaten haha.

    • +1

Yes, you can download anything from UseNet. And if your ISP is throttling torrent then this is the way to go . And it is really really fast, depending on your internet speed.

      • -1

Even Game of Throans?? omg! Better tell Foxtel!

    • +1

Just in case you didn't have enough yes here is another recommendation.

Since I have gone usenet I rarely ever use torrents. It is now more a back-up. Usenet is also easier to setup automation with programs like sickbeard and couch potato. I use to waste hours ever single month searching for, renaming naming files after download and then moving them to the desired location. Now it is all done for me.

  • -1

if only I had "unlimited" hard drive space.
(no one does so it's pointless if you plan on keeping whatever legal files you download)

    • Sorry but I don't see what your point is. This allows people to download as much as they want without worrying about restrictions.

Unlimited is very common now. It's better than setting stupidly highly unachievable usage limits. Hungry Jacks even do it with soft drinks. No one can drink an unlimited amount of soft drink too.

If one downloads more 200gb a month it would be pointless to go on to a restricted or block plan. The unlimited is much cheaper.

I'm on an unlimited plan and my unraid server expands with my requirements. I have just added my 4th 3tb drive. With the capability of being able to add a further 20 drives in the future. So that's 9tb of data I have gathered in the last couple of years. It would be scary to know what that would cost me in block plans

With hard drives growing in capacity I have the potential of a crazy amount of storage. I will never need an unlimited amount of storage but an unlimited plan suits my usage and wallet.
