BigPond (Cable) -> TPG (ADSL2)

Hi All,

Contemplating switching from Bigpond Cable (+ home phone) to TPG ADSL2 unlimited (+ home phone) $79.95, hoping to get some advice.

Looking at $50 saving per month.

Some info:

  • 5 users with multiple devices at home
  • Rarely use the home phone but my folks are keen to keep it
  • 200GB from Bigpond a month, starting to hit this limit every month

Questions:

Anyone with a similar experience? I know Cable -> ADSL2 is a downgrade but does anyone have a similar experience?
How is TPG in the Parramatta area (Sydney)?
How is TPG in general?

Thanks!

ADSL performance depends on your actual address location, not just your suburb.. namely the distance from your house to the telephone exchange, but also the age and condition of the copper and pits/ducts it runs through.
Your best bet is to ask your neighbors what speeds they get..For a speed guesstimate, based on distance to the exchange only, you can plug your address in here http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au/.

If you're happy with the estimated result, you should call TPG to make sure they have ports available at your exchange before you pull the pin on your existing connection.

  • TPG has NBN plans now. It may be worth checking out to see if NBN exists in your area.

Before subscribing with TPG, check how far you are away from the ADSL exchange using coverage map. The further out you are, the slower the speed gets.

I've been with TPG for 5+ years now, and I'm on their old 60 per month unlimited plan (subscribed to it when it first came out). Very happy with the service so far, although their tech support is a little unreliable, they have reps on Whirlpool forums to help out.

I pay $80 pm for 200Gb Telstra cable + home phone with speeds around 120Mbps (via ethernet) and phone calls to most landlines included.

I'd try improving your Telstra deal first before giving up cable…

    • Any way to get a deal like that now? I'd sign up immediately if I could get 200GB with 100mbps for $80ish. Looking to move from iinet (I get around 15mbps)

If you experienced cable, you will not like ADSL at all, even if you are close to the exchange. There is a noticeable difference in speed, especially with the amount of users in your house. Stick with cable if you can afford it.

    Thanks guys!

Called Telstra… they first offered me a homephone + 5GB per month for $80!!!! (overseas call centre)…

Got referred to a call centre here… was offered homephone ($20 credit/month) + 200GB Ultimate cable for $80!!! (Also a free new modem, needed it for Ultimate speeds)…

    Good advice Gordon… :)

    • Was that on a 24 month deal HAL? Or did you manage to get it on 12 months?

      • 24 months deal

    • That's an awesome deal. Did they say they needed to transfer you a certain dept/team? I am interested in signing up because of this!

      • Got a direct number from them 1800 218 964

Give that a go, no wait times either

        Good luck!

        • This is a great number to call, I waited less than 10 seconds to be put through. Unfortunately, the guy said it was impossible to get this deal - the closest deal was ultimate cable only for $79.95. He double checked with his team leader as well so he is asking if you are sure you have the phone bundled in as well.

Is there a reference that I can use for him to check that you got this deal?

        • Unfortunately didn't get a reference # from them.

The offer is only intended for pre-existing customers, at least that's what I was told. Basically it's their $100 bundle with a $20 "loyalty" discount.

Not sure which exact bundle I was signed up for but it's something similar to http://www.telstra.com.au/my-offer-summaries/download/docume…

        • Thanks for this - the guy thinks the plan is an old plan and cannot be offered anymore. It seems you were very lucky to get this. However, I just realised you were on an even older plan (since you didnt have the ultimate speed boost) and they moved you onto this plan. That SHOULD mean this plan you listed should still be available.

Hmmmm, anyways, so far, no luck for me.

        • Spoke to them recently…

Seems the plan has been updated to $105/month…not $100 (with $20 "loyalty" discount brings it to $85)

Apparently I was sold something that doesn't exist anymore?

Anyways this is the exact plan I was sold:

  • On another note… $6 for caller ID on landlines WTF…

  • Anyone manage get nice discount on the 500GB plan from Telstra?
