Mitubishi Triton 4X4 with options - $29500 Drive Away (2014)

Hi All,

I am very tempted by the local dealer offering a 2014 Dual Cab Manual Diesel Triton for $29500.
I saw around this time last year (May 2013) there was a very similar deal - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/102908

I'm chasing some advice with negotiating the best deal and if anyone purchased a car last year, how much they ended up getting it for. You can private message me if you don’t want to post here.

So I’ve been given a verbal of $29500 for:

2014 Dual Cab Triton

  • Manual
  • Diesel
  • Alloy wheels
  • Nudge bar
  • Side steps
  • Tow bar
  • Silver Paint (metallic option)

After thinking about it over the weekend, I don't want the nudge bar because I'm going to put on something like the ARB bullbar. So Tomorrow I will hear from the salesman asking when I'm going to come in and sign the deal, but I want to be prepared for some negotiating to remove the nudge bar and get a cheaper price.

  • Made in Thailand so there is a free trade agreement I think. Should be able to push for a bit more. Try the dealer down in Wollongong

    Ok cheers
    Although im in Perth

  • I'd suggest that you have a look for an online Aussie Triton owners' forum (eg. http://www.newtriton.net/), so you can learn about the model's weaknesses/issues. They used to be notorious for rough transmissions that died young - whether that's still the case, I don't know, but skimming through postings to an owners' forum will soon give you a picture of what the vehicle is really like.

Have you actually driven one? The 2.4L engine sounds small to me, but I'm a HiLux bloke, so what do I know.:-) And there won't be any discount for removing the nudge bar, so you can forget about that idea!

  • I'm going to follow this thread as I quite like the triton and for $30000 its cheap…but is it cheap for a reason?, anyone know if a new shape is out soon or even a new model?.

  • hello Good one

I would like a Triton Auto with chassis and looking for decent deal …

Thanks for your input iseenya. Yep, i've checked forums etc for the problems. Let's be honest, no car is perfect and where one person will have an awesome car without any problems, another person will say it's the worst car they've ever had.

Yes, I am a hilux fan as well, however price is an issue and the Hilux's don't come anywhere near a brand new triton. Last year a 2013 Toyota Hilux SR Dual Cab Diesel sold for around the $48k mark. This year i could buy the same 2013 model as an 'ex-demo' with 50km's on the clock, for $38k. While the 2014 models are still around the $48k price. This has had an impact on trade-ins and the second hand market, pushing the prices of cars down. Particularly when a person trades their car in after 12 months and finds that a brand new one is selling for $10k less, making their trade-in even less.

Slightly off track there, but what i'm getting at is, I can get a 2nd hand 2011 ex-mine vehicle hilux with 66,000kms for around the $25-29k mark, a brand new hilux 'from' $38k, or a brand new Triton at around the $29k mark. So is there that much of a difference in car to justify $9k ? The way i see it, it gives me more money to put the other accessories on, like canopy, bull bar, spot lights, ute liner etc.

Yes, I test drove the Triton and I didn't really have any complaints about the engine. Although it is a 2.5, it still makes 131kW

stemcell, i asked the same question to a couple of dealers. The response I got was that it's the old shape (since 2005) and it doesn't cost as much to produce them now. I assume there is a new shape coming, a quick google will produce a few websites that spy a new shape. I haven't seen anything concrete yet.

    • Please don't even think about buying an ex-mining vehicle - I've worked at minesites and seen just what the 4x4's go through in the course of a day's work. They may be resold as one owner but in reality they've often had dozens of drivers, many of whom didn't give a damn about them. The dealers used to love buying our minesite's used ones though and they'd put them on display in their yard with minimal pre-sale preparation and a big sign saying "Ex-mining". Apparently they sell themselves but none of us back at the minesite could ever work out why.

Given the Triton's cubic capacity, I'd imagine that the rated 131kW happens in a pretty narrow rev band, so you can probably look forward to lots of gear changing and clutch wear. And if the intercooler is still mounted down low, tucked behind the front bumper, I would treat any off-road excursions with considerable caution - it's way too exposed to harm down there.

    • Good post int21h :) iseenya the intercooler is something to be looked into as I'll be offroad, not in a hardcore way but still offroad.

  • these are fantastic value

if you search for the major brands you can find new 4x4 base spec manual utes with steel wheels and cloth vinyl interiors for under $30k

they are overstock of council and utilities fleets

if you can put up with the poverty spec interiors they are great buying

Personally, im not a fan of ex-mine vehicles. I too have heard how they have been pushed to their limits. I know people who start them cold and hold the accelerator flat to the floor and taken them over 'jumps'.
On the other side of that argument, a mechanic friend of mine has said that the hilux are pretty tough. Provided they have been serviced regularly and had the wearable items replaced, they should be good. Obviously there are exceptions to that, not every ex mine vehicle has been abused, and not all of them have been taken over jumps.
Me personally, its not what im after. Im going to use the 4x4 as a family car and you cant get the red dust out of the seats.
