Two of us are planning our first visit to Snowy Mountains in July this year. Don't want to drive. The bus tour package departure hours from Sydney aren't convenient…1 am or late evening.
What about train travel to Cooma, just over 6 hrs.
Thanks.

Thanks Yada. There're no more flights to Cooma.
theres a snowy mountains airport now
@Slippy
Isn't the Airport actually below Dinner Plain in Victoria ?
I'm not Slippy, but yes. The only Alpine airport in Australia is Hotham Airport (which is now pretty well non-operational, since their contract with QantasLink did not get renewed. No one flies there anymore).
There is barely any public transport from Cooma to Jindabyne. You are limited to Greyhound buses, which run once a day. Not sure what time they go from Cooma to Jindy, but from Jindy to Cooma the bus leaves around 4pm.
Your only other real option is to ride the school bus from Cooma to Jindy. At school drop off and pick up times.
Better off driving or hiring a car.
I lived in Jindabyne last winter, without a car, and it is a right PITA.
Good luck though :)
I wonder if a pensioner can get from Sydney to Snowy Mountains for $2.50?
If you walk, yes.
Ozsnow adventures and other mobs have bus only options. That leaves Sydney at 6pm.
There is no rail service to Cooma. The rail service terminates at Canberra and a Countrylink bus can get you to Cooma. However Cooma is about an hour away from the snowfields. Greyhound do run extra services during the snow season to Threadbo. I reckon the best way is to fly to Canberra and connect with the Murrays snow coach service, these run every couple of hours during the snow season.
Caught that train to Cooma once then hitch-hiked to Thredbo (was a fantastic journey)pity they canned it :)
(was in summer)
Hi Bab, have you looked at Gumtree.com.au? They often have people wanting buddies or partners for trips to help with petrol costs. Or there is Jucy, the car rental guys, they have relocatable cars and campers they need shifting around the east coast, which is on this site transfercar.com.au. Good luck.
If you take the train to cooma, it's another 1.5h or so to get to thredbo/perisher, and you'll either have to hire a car, or take a bus (??? not sure about this though).
If you want a more comfortable ride to the mountains, you can take flights to Cooma from Sydney but they're not cheap.
