I got one of these about 12 months ago and no complaints. Works well and is still going strong. Charges quickly and lasts for quite a while between charges.

How does it compare to a safety razor, e.g. Gillette Mach 3? I've never been able to use electric shavers, they are just too patchy on me and don't get a nice clean smooth shave.

      • +2

Let me know if you ever find the Holy Grailalso

      • +2

It's nothing on a Gillette Sensor (I don't regularly use the Mach 3), I got one a while ago as I have to be clean shaven at work… Honestly? I find the safety razors easier, quicker and closer…

        • Thanks. I used to use the Sensor but now find the Mach 3 much quicker and easier.

I still won't bother with electric. This question is the first I even remotely entertained it in 20 years.

I think they only work well if you have very fine, non-coarse facial hair that takes several days to get a good stubble going. For me they just leave my face red from trying to press as hard as possible and unevenly shaven, with the neck and jawline being impossible to pick up hairs from.

        • +1

If you're pressing hard with an electric razor, you're doing it all wrong - the pressure just makes the hair retract into the skin, out of reach of the blades. Correctly used, an electric razor glides easily over the skin and can be very effective indeed. In my experience, they win for speed and convenience and it's a draw for closeness of shave.

        • I purchased a high-end Philips years ago that was the same price as a small country. It was the best electric I'd tried, but the shave was still disappointing. It never gave a clean shave. Always looked (and felt) like I had 12-24 hours growth. I don't know how people use them for their daily shave. I don't have fine or non-coarse facial hair either.

      • Stick to the Mach 3 it is far better, I recently bought a Phillips wet and dry and was bitterly disappointed.

Does it work with 230V in Australia ?

      • Most chicks dig a bit of stubble. You don't need to shave everyday.

  • Yeah I also got this model last time it was posted. It's my first electric and I love how much quicker it is than using a razor (especially since I don't need shaving cream with the former but I do with the latter.)

However, there are many hairs on my lower neck that it simply won't get, no matter how long they are, or what angle I use, or how hard I press. So I use a safety razor once every few days for that area. It still works out much faster for me.

Another problem is that it can't be used while plugged in, so you have to remember to keep the battery charged. (Though it lasts about 3 weeks or so.)

For people who are experienced with this stuff, would the razors that have three rotating blades cope better with my neck?

    • +1

Yes, the Philips type 3 rotating blades work on hairy neck.

      • Would this be suitable to shave a scalp daily?

        • I am not bald yet, but I can't see a problem.

        • I was told by sales staff that it shouldn't be used for the head. Not sure how legit their claim is.

    • i was told by a shaver shop employee that the rotating blades take more skin off like an old fashioned razor so if you have sensitive skin you can expect irritation

      • Doesn't happen. The hair has to poke through holes/slits and then be snipped off. (So the cutters are separated from the skin.)

I have a 3 rotor "3D" Philips shaver and course, slow growing, troublesome hair.

If I shave daily I get slight stuble which you can feel when sliding against the grain.

If I leave it for three to four days my shave is patchy. I use the inbuilt foil to clean the worst.

If I leave it a week, I need to use clippers first. It picks up nothing.

If I use a safty razer, my next rotor shave will be patchy.

For the first four months it shaved smooth as a baby. My blades are around 18 months old and due for replacement.

  • Good deal, i've been using the ES8101 for 2 years and it's still going strong. No complaints from me.

I have a braun cooltec as well but i really don't like it as the head is fixed and doesn't move around with the contours of your jaw line

In my opinion, nothing beats a new blade but the electrics are acceptable and there's far less chance of getting cut. This is a very cheap price. I'd be super-excited if Panasonic made an AA-battery model that wasn't a basic travel shaver and had 3 blades like this one here and moved a step up from the travel model (which I love for the AAs but not for the single blade performance) http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-ES3831K-Single-Travel-Shaver…

    Embedded batteries are undignified.

    • they really aren't that cumbersome. I use mine every 2-3 days and i charge it once a month for an hour or so

      • longevity-wise, when the battery goes bad after some years, they make replacement a hassle and Panasonic don't let you shave with the unit plugged in without charging the battery first.

    • AA batteries are crap.

They have insanely crap voltage drop-off compared to Ni-MH batteries - so they suck for anything that draws a little bit of power.

That's why you never see them with AA batteries except for cheap/crap ones.

      • AA batteries are crap.

They have insanely crap voltage drop-off compared to Ni-MH batteries

I am talking about Ni-MH AA batteries. Using AAs would allow for easy swaps and easy replacement when the battery ages and can't hold much charge.

        Panasonic use AAs for their:
        beard trimmer http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-ER2403K-Position-Moustache-T…
nose hair / facial hair trimmer http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-ER-GN30-K-Vortex-Facial-Trim…
        bikini trimmer http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-ES246AC-Bikini-Shaper-Trimme…

        …and others.
I don't see why they haven't done it yet. I have the beard / hair trimmer and it has no problems running on AA recharageables. At the very least they should allow their shavers to be used when plugged in the mains. Instead, the shaver just charges the battery when plugged in. If you have an aging battery (that needs replacement) or you simply don't have time to charge and would like to pop in a charged set, you are in a spot of bother.

My experience might help people considering switching to electric.

I have thick facial hair and need to shave every day. Bought two electric razors off amazon from ozbargain deals. The first was a philips norelco sensotouch 2d. Was a huge disappointment, the shave wasn't nearly close enough, looked like I hadn't shaved that morning if I went to work. And I managed to destroy one of the three rotating blades while washing it, so that was that.

The second is a Panasonic ES-LA63-S Arc 4. Shaves much better than the Philips, definitely looks clean shaven. Maybe not enough for an interview day. But the problem is it doesn't work on my neck. Like at all. Even if I haven't shaved for 3-4 it doesn't touch hair under the jawbone if that's the right term. So I need to use a manual shaver with it, which kind of defeats the point. And ends up taking the same amount of time.

So I stocked up on Fusion blades in the next sale, which is still on apparently: http://www.shavershop.com.au/online-store/blade-shavers/wome…

No going back. Nothing beats a close manual shave. At this price I can replace blades often enough. Overall probably costs than a $100 electric over two years (That's about how long the blades last I think, and with Amazon prices you'll be getting a new shaver for less than the cost of replacement blades). No going back for me, maybe the $300-$400 electric shavers are better but I doubt they'll be as good as manual, or save me time, so why bother?

Oh and I managed to get cuts from an electric shaver trying to shave closer. I don't get cuts from Fusion if I replace blades often enough.

Tried Schick, was pretty good. But with shaver shop 50% off sales, the price advantage is gone so I'm back to Gillette.

My experience is the opposite. I have sensitive skin and bleed like a stuck pig if I use a "safety" razor. Even the triple head electric shavers cause me severe blood loss over a week.
I've only used an electric shaver for the past 30 years (only had 4 shavers in that time so how much money have I saved???).
I have the shaver advertised, used it for over a year and it is brilliant. Charges in an hour and lasts for a week. You have to be a moron not to be able to read the LCD charge indicator and tell when it needs recharging.
Even with a 10% charge level I can get two shaves out of it if I push it.

  • Good shaver. Worked well for around 12 months then upgraded to the 4 blade Panasonic. Good price for this unit

  • Does this come with an non australian power-plug?

Thanks OP for the heads up.

Also bought a spare foil/blade set which at US$25 (after activating the coupon) is the cheapest it has been for a few years according to 3camels

Don't think it's recommended for use in or around the areas of the balls/gooch.

  • +1

I've gone from blades to shaver to blades now on to a shaver.

It seems all the people using them, who go back to blades are.

A Not using them correctly ie you are not suppose to apply pressure, its suppose to glide.
B Not giving their face enough time to adapt. (Maybe hype, but I noticed a marked improvement in the 2nd week)

I'm using a wet/dry and twice a week I shave with the cream. The shave I receive is quicker and just as smooth as any blade I've tried. I have tried 3 blades 4 blades and 5 blades.

A trip down the shaver shop might be educating for some.
