How Broden are you?

Alright, time to confess. We all do it, it's in our nature as OzBargainers.
What have you broden'd from Ozbargain lately?
What is the biggest item you have bought to resell?

I remember after the Lytro deal, there were spawns of Lytros on eBay and Gumtree. After mobile phone deals, gumtree pops up with "unwanted gifts" for sale.

Personally, I admit to reselling Amazon harddrives to friends. Also joined the Lytro gumtree selling spree (but only after I used it and honestly didn't like it!)

What have you broden'd for a bit of cash?

Nothing. I honestly don't see the need.

    Like that's going to happen.

I've sold some things to relatives/friends on impulse purchases for what they cost me as I didn't need it, but I don't remember buying anything with the intention of selling it for profit.

  • Personally, I admit to reselling Amazon harddrives to friends.

I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing. It is a win-win situation in all, you're basically a micro-competitor against all the other computer shops. It helps decrease prices (even only a little bit).
All retailers take a risk in knowing the market may not like what they stock at their price. You took one too, it's okay.

I find those who whinge about brodening are those who miss out on a very limited deal, whereas Amazon is a massive supplier. It's all about "who's getting hurt", the big guy or the little guy. The idea of how corporations are heartless and out to destroy your lives. I guess that idea is only connected to the rate of required return demanded by the investors. Then again, if they don't make profit, who's going to pay employees which keep them.. in existence?

I guess with limited deals, the idea for limits per customer, is that when a promotion is offered, it's supposed to attract more customers to buy their other products. When the intended action does not have its planned results, the initial offer tends to not be repeated thanks to the once-bitten-twice-shy thing.

Where the extreme douchebag move of Gerry Harvey (http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2004/07/05/1088879409996.h…) buying out a genuine discounted product from myer, affected massive potential customers from Myer as an exemplary instance of "brodening". Buying them out under the best financial interests of your company is fine and acceptable. Sending a letter that calls them "Friggin idiots" leaves their image as a responsible chairman, to be questioned..

I think we will have to make an exception for Gerry Harvey.

    I admit doing it, actually. I got a double-whemmy.

Dicksmith sale -> Purchased 4 xbox consoles, official microsoft hard drives, controllers, etc etc. (Claimed back the exact value of the purchase) ie. Microsoft Cash back was a set dollar amount, for the 250GB Hard Drive was like $5x.xx I paid $50.00, I than also sold the hard drive.

I admitted it from day one, I don't see an issue with it… I was there at 6, and ran to get the first lot of everything. I didn't see any tickets on the Logitech stuff so I didn't bother. To find out, they were discounted, just not stickered…

Dicksmith issued that sale knowingly, there was no limits. I did not commit fraud, or go agains't any policies, or cry to the ACCC that I did fortunately get a lot that day.

    BUT

I do not ever knowingly try and get price error items….

Selling takes time, also there's a lot of hassle invovled if the product fails on the buyer prematurely and you have to take it back for RMA.

And then there's also the chance that someone else may be doing the same thing, so instead of making a profit you break even instead, or make a loss.

I have broden'ed some Logitech keyboards from Catch of the Day. This was a couple of years ago, I bought 6 units, sold 4 of them and gave away the other two to my parents.

Since then I have not bought anything for resale, namely due to the general increases in costs of postage, and eBay fees. I also hate dealing with idiots on Gumtree.

  • Not so much me, but my mother loves the sales on Rice Bran oil (Alfa One, in particular). She goes to the store and they usually only stock 2 or 3 so she buys them. Then gets a raincheck, and goes to another store. One time, she bought 10 4L tins.

    This thread should be deleted.
It might encourage people to bulk buy on future Top Deals meaning less to go around for other Ozbargainers.

ozbargain 101: you snooze, you lose! I'm not really at all bothered if people buy to sell, but if you're going to be greedy keep it to yourself!

    • I thought about it before I posted, but I figured people would be smart enough to make their own decisions and stand by them. If you're a reseller person, then you would've already done it already. If you're person who wouldn't resell or don't see the point in it, a post like this wouldn't sway you.

This post isn't designed to encourage anything. I wanted to know what types of people were around Ozbargain, and how honest people would be. Like I mentioned before, I've seen eBay and Gumtree spontaneously pop up with spawns of identical items shortly after being posted on Ozbargain. I was just curious.

  • This was a number of years back when projectors were about $10k each…

I was in the process of quoting one up as the company had gotten broken into and the projector stolen. The quote comes back at about $1200… So I told the vendor to double-check the prices and he comes back and says it's right.

I confirm a second time, price is still right..

So I told him that I was going to buy 10 of them if his price was really $1.2k. At that point they all realised the mistake :(

i can proudly say i've never 'broden' anything i've found on Ozbargain. Lets be honest here, we're all tight areses hence why we're on this site. The attitude that where you find something cheap from this site and 'bulk buy' to sell later for profit is absolute garbage. This place was setup to help like minded individuals find bargains, we're here to help each other out. To buy stuff and flog off for profit isn't doing anyone here any good but yourself. Think about what you got you there in the first place.

That's your opinion. If it hurts no one I don't see why not. Just put a restriction for limit per customer and its fine. They also take a risk in knowing they could possibly have bought something really cheap, try to sell it but no one actually buys it.
      Micro-retailing.
Personally, I have no problem with it, unless someone decides to buy out EVERYTHING (looking at you Gerry Harvey). Not really worth my time to burn many hours over $20-$50 of profit, and take a massive risk of perhaps not being able to move it at all.

  • I did it sometimes when i jump to a deal that i dont need because its cheap and save me a good money. Which ended not using the item for couple of months. So i let it go to someone who are going to use it. Usually i aim for what it costed me.

Or when the deal for multi-items and only want one of them, best way to sell the rest and keep what i want.
