ANZAC Day Sales/Promotion, what's your thoughts?

I have my own thoughts on "ANZAC"/"ANZAC Day" being used by retailers for promotions. But I was curious what other ozbargainers think.

Should these "deals" be banned? And as a related bonus topic, any comments as to whether they should be banned if they breach legislation?

Good idea, the more sales the better

  • I think the Qantas Epiqure email was not appropriately worded (and hence, disrespectful - good they withdrew it) but generally no issues with sales/promotions associated with ANZAC Day.

Retailers use Christmas and Easter as opportunities to promote sales. I don't see how this is that much different?

Not sure if people realise this day is also to remember the current service persons and people that have been killed in the last several years as well.

Imagine those families with babies and toddlers expaining that ANZAC day is for remembering daddy.

Recently bereaved spouses and parents dealing with fresh grief and getting emails for ANZAC specials.

  • I'd have said this promotion from Dan Murphy takes the crown for the most inappropriate offer for anzac day :

    Good beer though…

    • It is not ANZAC day promotion at all.
It is not in the weekly offers.
It is not available at this price in Victoria.

Worded well or not, As a consumer, as long as your intentions were to sell goods and not insult a target group, no problems.

There are laws to protect exploitation of specific cultural icons, Bradman comes to mind. As mentioned above, no issue if a retailer is having a sale that happens to be on Anzac day and advertises this fact.

When someone is remembering a deceased spouse, child, parent, having it highjacked as a marketing opportunity is incredibly demeaning.

It is a day of remembrance / mourning not a celebration like Christmas/Fathers day.

It would be interesting to understand peoples response in terms of their circumstance as well.

For instance I vote 'Ban them' and I lost a grandparent to WW2 and have many generations of serving diggers.

Do those voting 'don't care' consider ANZAC day significant?

The Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Michael Ronaldson, condemned the website and said permission to use the word “Anzac” in connection with such competitions could only be granted by the minister.
“I demand that this site be immediately pulled down. This is an unauthorised use of the word 'Anzac’,” Senator Ronaldson said from Turkey ahead of Anzac Day commemorations.
“The Government, and I as Minister, will not tolerate this sort of disrespectful behaviour, especially in the lead up to the Centenary period.
“The Government will vigorously pursue any individual or organisation who breach these regulations.”
According to the Department of Veterans' Affairs, regulations were introduced in 1921 to protect the word Anzac, and any word which resembles it, from inappropriate use.
The regulations state that "no person may use the word 'Anzac', or any word resembling it, in connection with any trade, business, calling or profession or in connexion with any entertainment or any lottery … without the authority of the Minister for Veterans' Affairs".

I don't really care if anyone has a sale that runs along with Anzac day, but they really shouldn't be using the name at all, without permission
