OnePlus One, our next budget phone? Top-tier Android phone cost only $299 USD with killer specs?

So there are way too many news about OnePlus One, no one heard of them before, and it just seems to come out of nowhere (The OnePlus company is from Shen Zhen, China), but seriously, the phone looks pretty good with its specs:

Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor at 2.5 GHz
3GB of RAM (both the S5 and One only have 2GB)
5.5 inch 1080p IPS Gorilla Glass 3 display
13 megapixel Sony camera with dual LED flash and 5 megapixel front facing camera
Integrated stereo speakers
3,100 mAh battery
Dimensions of 152.9 x 75.9 x 8.9 mm and 162 grams

The device runs CyanogenMod 11S, which is based on Android 4.4 and looks a lot like a stock Android device. It will be available for $299 for a 16GB white model and just $50 more ($349) for a whopping 64GB black model.

However, Australia is not on their list of country that will get OnePlus One when it is first released. What a shame.

So what do you guys think of it? Would it be our next favourite phone just like Nexus 5?

  • Hmmm.. My opinion is that Chinese phones in general looks good specs-wise, but in reality suffers from a few issues might drive you mad in the long run. Generally speaking(I am not saying this phone has these issues), Chinese phones has GPS reception and battery quality issues. GPS may only work intermittently or takes a really long time to lock, and battery life may not be as advertised and also possibly dies quite quickly after a few months of use.

I am sure there are some good ones out there, it's just too risky for me to put down $299 to "upgrade" to something that may cause more frustration for me in the long run. :)

    • "GPS may only work intermittently or takes a really long time to lock"

obvious really - huawei, the CIA and China Intel all need to see where you are before your phone can get to use the GPS positioning …

  • Well the company is founded by a former VP of Oppo, and the reviews for the recent line of Oppo handsets have been general positive. So if that's anything to go by, the OnePlus One will be at least on par with the mainstream brands. Furthermore, the phone is developed in cooperation with cyanogenmod, so there shouldn't be any issues in terms of software updates.

  • I'm definitely keen. I found out about it a month ago and have been getting more and more excited..
People need to understand that the price is a "promotional" price designed to get headlines and build a name for the new company. I'd expect the OnePlus Two to be around or slightly above Nexus pricing to break even on hardware and maybe make some profit on accessories and the OnePlus Three to be more expensive that Nexus and be profitable for OnePlus.

It's currently well clear at the top of my "next phone" shortlist.
The only doubt I have is about build quality, but I'm reasonably confident that it'll be top notch build quality. Software wise and Hardware selection wise it ticks all the boxes for me.

By the time they're publicly available, we'll know whether the phone is any good, but on paper and in spirit, it sounds to me as though OnePlus is a winning combination of knowhow and listening to customers.

  • I read the interview on engadget and was quite impressed. The CEO seems serious about creating a decent user experience, from a software, specs and design point of view. It's refreshing when you look at what LG and Samsung do to their UI's, and the plastics they use. The One looks good and the materials are high quality.

Time will tell. Not sure if I would buy one over something like a HTC One M8 though, as that's premium. Also handsets like the Nexus are a known quantity and have established support here.

    • Considering OPO cost half as much as the M8 outright, I would take the ONO. A better comparison would be to other phones in the price bracket, such as Nexus 5.

      • While i agree the nexus and one plus are great phones, i dont think anything besides the iPhone 5 and maybe galaxy note 3 can match up to the premium quality of the HTC phones. last years one was praised as the best phone surpassing the nexus 5 and competition because of its premium feel and features.
The HTC One M8 will head down the same path unless someone shakes the floor with matching or surpassing quality.

        • There is no doubt that both M7 and M8 are great phones, I'm a fan myself. But what I'm saying is that with the value for money you get with the ONO, its better to compare it with something in the similar price bracket.

People will take into consideration the price difference. For example, other than the vanilla android experience and speed of updates, the main appeal of the nexus range is the pricing. Not everyone is willing to fork out an extra $300 for premium build.

        • Agree. I have an M7, and my wife has a Nexus 5. If I was buying another phone now I'd get a nexus. Apart from the camera, the extra you pay for an iphone or M8 is not worth it.

  • I only wish this was a dual unit :(

  • aww sif not send to Australia :(
