for a great smartphone camera, this is it, also, it's worth a piece of memory thing as Nokia Mobile R.I.P. :(

While a possibility, it's just some company that happens to have the Nokia branding at that point. All their talent is now employed by Microsoft. Nokia's devices division pretty much just got renamed Microsoft Mobile Oy(Finnish for ltd.). So, here's a question for Nokia fans, do you like a company's name or their people?
So, here's a question for Nokia fans, do you like a company's name or their people?
Most people are not worried about anything apart from brand name.
e.g People buy Holden's because it's "Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi" even though they're buying a rebadged Korean made vehicle
I bought a Nokia with Windows as OS and not the other way around.
Are you saying a Commodore is a rebadged Korean made vehicle?
Nope I'm not - but most Holden's sold are not manufactured in Australia……
The last true Nokia mobile was the Pureview 808 which despite running Symbian OS has got a better camera than the Lumia 1020. The Lumia range was already consumed by Microsoft at this stage and not really "Nokia" anymore in its truest sense.
Nokia is no longer a Brand, they were bought by Microsoft. Microsoft is going to re-name Nokia to Microsoft Mobile
Not exactly. Microsoft only bought the Nokia Devices & Services business - Nokia will still exist, primarily with their Here Mapping products, they just won't be creating mobile phones (for the foreseeable future at least).
Not primarily with the Here Mapping, although that is still part of the original company. A much bigger part of the company is the ex Nokia Siemens Networks, now Nokia Solutions and Networks. They are still a major player in the network infrastructure side of things.
the here navigation is worth keeping as they could charge for it, it is that good.
the streaming music player could use some stability work from nokia though….
Well, Elop certainly "backdoor'd" Nokia for MS.
Yep. If Nokia had had the sense to use android in 2010, they might be where Samsung is now. They were too proud, then they were too late. I would buy a Nokia tomorrow if it ran android 4.4. I tried a windows phone a couple of years ago - smooth, but not what I want.
I have the Lumia 925 and Note 3 and I don't use the lumia much, maybe because I like big screen. Lumia 1020 have the same screen size as the 925, so I guess this phone is not for me. I don't find the lumia 925 to have any advantage over the Note 3 at all, just bought it to try out Windows 8 and at this point, I think Windows 8 have a lot of catch up to do in respect of apps, Note 3 just feel a lot smoother with the same apps like facebook.
1020 has a better camera (pretty much the only reason to get this phone).
Ya, the only advantage I see is during night time, Note 3 takes perfectly good photo during day time, night time is a shame though.
there are so many low light situations that the 1020 shines, indoors this camera is sensational.
the screen is excellent also, the auto brightness actually works compared to andoids attempts and outdoor readability of the screen is superb (when you really do need to see the photos you take)
Nokia's started making an android phone which is sadly low-end, but Nokia 920/1020 are always good phones for shooting photos.
1020 really holds its value, since it's still not that cheap (the grip has no technology at all). When it drops to around $360, I'll get one.
the grip has a battery and an electronic shutter button (it's not merely a mechanical pass through)…isn't that technology?
(that's if you don't consider a tripod mount as "technology").
Battery would be technology. The "Tech" I mentioned is more like putting mini-version Mode dial/ISO dial/ Shutter speed control onto the grip which electronically synchronising with the phone (which may sound crazy, but would make Nokia really stands out from other smartphones, however Microsoft definitely will not allow Nokia to do that crazy stuff).
that would be awesome…but no chance of that happening!
personally, i think the camera grip is great as it is - a must have accessory for me. i do wish the battery had a higher capacity given the size (would have liked at least the same as the phone itself, to allow at least 1 full charge), but the extra juice and the camera mount (as well as the feel of the grip) make it worthwhile for me. i would almost consider getting a second one…(if anyone wants to offload their unwanted grip for a nice price, let me know!)
as awesome as manual controls would be, they are functions that can already be done through the interface…so i am happy to sacrifice them for more battery and camera mount (which you can't do through software!).
why would Microsoft can the Nokia name? There's so much brand awareness there.
Because they want to compete with Apple directly having their own branded hardware.
in australia and europe maybe…not in the US. and how positive is that brand awareness anyway? most people i know think of nokia as a thing of the past…
I would disagree, especially within recent years. Ever since the Lumia marketing push has happened Nokia's brand recognition has been pretty up imo. Now if you changed that name to Windows Mobile/Microsoft Mobile? I don't see any advantage of that.
I'm not sure about in the US, Nokia has never had a large marketshare there (even with the Lumia push). But I feel the brand is still seen in good light, as opposed to if they changed it completely.
i would argue that most of the brand recognition is for the lumia range. "nokia" is still considered a dinosaur of the mobile industry "with their crappy symbian", "but hold on a sec, nokia lumia is actually pretty good!"
all the positive brand recognition is with the lumia brand, hence why the lumia brand will continue, not nokia.
you may disagree, but i think it's clear microsoft agrees with me! ;)
haha fair enough, maybe I'm just too nostalgic :P
Wait has there been an official announcement on this though? Can only find stuff on name speculation.
Me and all my family have Nokia Windows Phone devices, 6 in total, but you'd be surprised how many say "Nokia still exists?" When they see our phones.
As loyal as we are, no issues here with the Nokia name disappearing from their mobile devices, to be honest I'd rather see Microsoft branding only on our phones.
As others have pointed out, the most important market for Nokia/MS is the USA, Nokia really is nothing as far as brand awareness is concerned in the states, and it never was, even when Nokia was big in Australia.
Bring on the new Microsoft branding I say!
hi, can the camera grip be removed? does it work just like a case for the 1020?
yes, it is a slip on case.
Windows Phone 8.1 on this would make it even more of a beast.
a power sucking beast if the last update is anything to go on. it was a 2 days on a charge to just 1, and even airplane mode now sucks the juice (yes i switched on the power saving features and blocked dodgy apps from running in background)
software updates are not the saviour of a almost good phone…i have found the battery app that logs the percentage of remaining power was the reason for the high power usage. irony?
it only became a problem on updates of it after the black phone software update, hence my mix up.
its a shame as it looks so pretty, it was made by enless soft and is on the software scrapheap now.
BTW, you can use "ANZAC" this coupon to get free shipping and AUD 10 off..
Might be a deal…how long is the ANZAC coupon good for? i notice there is another $10 off code on the coupons page too and the free shipping just seems to be a promo on as came up without any coupon, is the camera grip worth it? is this a grey import with only 12 months warranty or AU stock with 2 year warranty? really needing upgrade from iphone 4 and always heard good things on the camera on the 1020 and that is basically all i use phone for these days is snapping pics at concerts and basic apps like pandora and whatsapp. also can you use it for internet tethering wirelessly or usb to laptop or something?
it's worth a piece of memory thing as Nokia Mobile R.I.P. :(
I suspect its probably the end of Nokia handsets with Windows Mobile OS and believe that they may go down the path of producing handsets with another operating system on them in the future with the Nokia branding.
