Create a hotspot with old phone?

Hi there,

I currently have the Optus $29 Prepaid cap deal (previously woolworths mobile) but I want to better use the 5GB on my various other devices

I can't share my data from my iphone, because it is restricted for some reason, but i have been told in the past if i put the sim card into another phone (android) it should allow me to share my internet.

Firstly is there anyway to override the iphone and allow access to my laptop or ipad

Secondly if no question 1, will it work on an android device?

Thirdly if yes to question 2, what cheap phone should i get to allow sharing internet access to my iphone? I dont care if its second hand, from ebay or what ever, just cheap!

It may be a bit sketchy with the deals, but Im really unsure, it may even be an easy solution. but i have no idea whats to ever

Thanks and I would appreciate no hate!

have a great day :)

  • I have the same plan. I used my old N4 and my new N5 and both work perfect with tethering.

  • maybe jailbreak the iPhone:
search in this thread for jailbreak: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2022520

  • It may be a little bit more than you want to process, but read this thread if you would like to get your head around the intricacies of your questions as relates tethering and iPhones, Optus prepaid vs postpaid APN issues and more.

Technically, tethering on Woolworths Mobile/Optus Prepaid replacement is against T's & C's, but others here on OzB and beyond indicate no practical issues. No real indications that Optus will bother doing the packet-data or other analysis to catch people out - not on your plan anyway.

Use a cheap Android phone. Huawei Y201 has been as cheap as $39 when on special, Y300 for about double that, other models incrementally a bit more. Even if you buy a Telstra-locked 850/2100MHz version - as most Huawei prepaids are - they are easily and cheaply unlocked (search 'bagman' username on OzB) and unless you're living in an outer suburb, 900MHz skin-of-the-teeth-connected blackspot, or the actual 'sticks', you'll likely find that data downloads work just fine on the Optus 2100MHz band alone. My experience anyway, when tethering Optus reseller data.

I don't know how much APN 'bouncing' you'll get when you try different ones on the plan you're on, but I'm sure that you'll find at least one that works ok.

  • Sometimes Tethering isn't properly enabled if you signup with Optus resellers.
