  • I'd be really interested if you could post some example flights.

  • I just checked the following

Melbourne to KL Friday 10th October for $199
KL to Paris Friday 10th October for $339

Paris to KL Saturday 19th October for $450
KL to Melbourne Sunday 19th October for $145

  • Have you added the taxes yet?

  • Doesn't look like Perth is an option?

    • Perth to KL for $189 throughout the whole year…

Be careful if you are booking flights with a short stop over in KL. They are NOT connecting flights and if your first flight is delayed you may miss your flight from KL to Paris without compensation. Really good idea to make sure you have travel insurance. Highly recommend leaving at least 8 hours between flights.

I did this flight with Air Asia (from Melbourne) when they first started flying to Paris. Happy with the service, it's a budget airline but if you can get tickets at these prices it's hard to complain. When we flew we had a 2 day stopover in KL on the way there and 3 on the way back. Was good to break the flight up and meant that if we were delayed it wasn't going to effect the trip too much. Think they were delayed on 3 of the 4 flights but only by half hour or so.
There isn't much at the KL airport - LCCT(low cost terminal) and it's a bit under an hour from there to KL city centre. Cheapest option is the bus at about $6 and there are plenty of Taxi's that will take you for about $25 (based on memory of prices a few years ago).

    • Fyi, Air Asia is moving from LCCT to KLIA in May

      • GOOD PICK UP! It looks like AirAsia got all of the deals that they wanted for KLIA2. It is a shame that Malaysia Airport Holdings Berhad gave into AA and gave them exemption from having to use aerobridges at a new and modern airport terminal.

    • Hated the flights with Air Asia, plane looked very poorly maintained. Stained seats, dirty walls, and very turbulent flight from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur on their Airbus A330.

Found the flight with Malaysia Airlines far superior on the Airbus A380 to Europe.

  • So the total cost is ~1140 return from Melb. It is quite confusing when you list one way fare.

There's other options return as well, like Norwegian air $200 to bangkok (from norway which is cheap to get to) then onto melbourne. Total cost will vary, especially for backpackers that are doing the summer in Europe and going many places and don't want to have to fly out the same city they fly into. It's more flexible this way.

      • Wow didn't know Norwegian flied to Bangkok. I flied Norwegian last year and it was great. Hey Stockpimp, do you know any other budget airline that flies from Asia to Europe?

        • +2

Not sure but yes i've flown Norwegian for $250 from Bangkok to Sweden before, they always have good deals. I think Oslo to Bangkok later in the year is $200 or something. And they will be flying to New York soon as well.

        • Oh wow that is cheap! Do they have sales often do you know? Right now it seems like they are about $400 dollars. Thanks for the info.

    • Two times tables are a bitch… ;)

Anywhere in the 5th or 6th Arrondissement, preferably as close to the Seine as you can find. Will put you in the middle of the action with all of Paris at your doorstep. Don't rule out apartments either - Paris has an amazing network of rental apartments which are particularly handy for longer stays or for larger groups, since typical hotels in Paris are tiny.

The Bauer's are great people, really friendly and go out of their way to help you with anything you may need. The included breakfast is amazing.

Only problem is that it's located in the 10th, and closest station is Gare De Nord, where you have to be careful of Gypsy's stealing your luggage and rummaging through your backpack.

The 10th also seems a little scarier than the rest of Paris in the evenings.

  • $1200 with low cost crap airline (don't forget to add $$ for luggage and meals. hrmm seem to have seen direct flight deals around at this price, no need to jump.

    • This is a good deal for backpackers who aren't too fussed and also good especially if people want to travel on short notice for cheap without having to book months in advance. Vietnam airlines is full service.

      • +1

I always get the full service when flying Vietnam ;)

      • lol

    • Vietnam airline service always include meals and at least 20kg luggage allowance.

  • Air Vietnam isn't as bad as people think. Some flights are actually affiliated with Air France, so you actually go on Air France. I missed out… I needed flights for November but it is all sold out I think….

    • I also missed out. Checked flights when it was posted, on lunch break. Got home and went to book them properly and there are now no flights from october through december. Looks like any flight at that time will be chockers of ozbargainers.

        • thanks for the links.

gosh i've had no luck getting the cheap flights! can't get less than $2000 pp in that period… am i doing something wrong?

  • When I looked at this option last year then I dismissed it due to transfer visa requirement costs of over $130 USD per person but I'm not sure if this was correct but I would definitely research any visa requirements before booking even if just transferring in VN only.

  • As if anyone in their right mind would fly Vietnam airlines.
