30% Off coupon code at nitelights.com.au (I Don't have an expiry date for it but it was working as of 0750 this morning)

I Have used many different brands of mountain bike lights over the years (Gloworm, Lupine, Trail LED, Magicshine to name a few), from top of the line big $ set ups to cheap ebay clones and without a doubt NiteLights provide the best bang for your buck lights available.

Materials, build and performance are all top quality, comparable to lights costing hundreds of dollars more. Not only do they sell excellent value lights but their customer service is awesome; they are very reasonable and will go out of their way to help you. If you have issues, problems or concerns email them and chances are they will come of with a solution that makes you happy.

If you want to have a look at what they have to offer before you purchase you can generally find their tents at most of the bigger mountain bike events around including the SCOTT and MONT 24hr races. If you do happen to get to one of their tents during an event you will quickly notice the steady stream of riders walking in and buying new lights before the start of the event - a pretty encouring sign.

Both the Shotfire and Shadowfire are excellent lights - I'm currently using the shotfire mounted on the bars and a shadowfire on my lid. If your looking for a stand alone light you can't go past the shadowfire (mounted to your helmet) but I would recommend both/either. Be mindful that these are intended to be used as mountain bike lights, if using them as commuter lights be careful where they are pointing otherwise you may have to deal with some cranky car drivers.

The only thing I could fault is that somethimes email replies can be a bit slow, although this seems to be a problem when using the website feedback/enquiry as opposed to manually sending an email.

Shipping time is always good/as stated and I have never waited longer than 4 days to receive my orders.

    Best bang for your buck?

  • Instead of simply negging the deal and leaving a comment that helps no one, perhaps you could elaborate on why you think this isn’t a bargain and provide a comment that is useful to other ozbargainers.

    Is there a better deal available for Nitelights? Have you used the lights and found they performed poorly? Have you had a bad customer service experience with NiteLights?

    Providing a little more information will help other ozbargainers make an informed decision as to whether 30% off these lights represents a good deal or whether you simply negged the deal because you don’t understand the difference or don’t have experience comparing these lights with $1200 lupines or $40 ebay clones.

    And yes, I consider the Shotfire and Shadowfire lights some of the best ‘bang for your buck’ lights available.

    I’ve used many sets of lights over 20 odd years of mountain bike riding including lights worth $1200+ right through to $40 ebay clones and when all things are considered; Beam pattern, battery performance, customer service etc these lights win hands down.

    In the last few years alone I’ve had 4 sets of lights in the <$50 range. These lights all provided pretty good lighting for the money (although when comparing with other lights all seemed to have greatly inflated lumen specs) and good to pretty good beam patterns but they didn't last long at all and I didn't have great experiences with them;

    • 1 of the light units stopped working after about 6 months use, in the middle of the forest in pitch black darkness (Murphy’s Law).

    • 2 different sets suffered from battery/charger problems after less than 4 months use. They would not hold charge; I replaced both batteries and even tried new chargers but had the same problem with the replacements.

    • My last experience was a little more serious. I placed a battery on charge and came back an hour or later to find the unit on the brink of burning down my house – smoke, melting plastic and the lovely smell that comes along with such things! It was less than 6 months old.

    Now of course you can buy lights that out perform the shadow and shotfire, but you’re looking at $500+. I’ve spent big money on lights before and for me at least, I don’t find an extra $350 or more worth of performance out of premium lights to justify the price.

    If you don’t ride or don’t have a lot of experience with mountain bike lights I can understand why some would consider this on the pricey side, after all there just lights right? Maybe, but can be huge differences between differnt lights battery performance, beam pattern, longevity, weights etc and at this point in time (light performance is coming along in leaps and bounds) I don’t think you will find lights of this quality at a similar or lower price point.
