Cheap birthday present that seems expensive?

My older sister's 30th birthday is around the corner (end of next week) and I am in need of some gift ideas. She's not really into sentimental gifts, and all I know is that she really likes branded/expensive pretty things. I don't really understand the whole obsession with luxury brands but I do want to get something nice for her. I have about $50 to spend (I'm on a student's budget) and I have no idea what to get, where to look, or what brands are "good" brands. The only name brands I am familiar with are way out of my price range (Chanel, YSL, Prada, Hermes). My main fear is that, in my ignorance, I will buy something branded that is a ripoff or not a 'good brand' (e.g. I've heard people don't consider Guess to be a 'real brand' and that Armarni Exchange is a bit scummy).

I've considered looking outside of luxury fashion items and instead into luxury appliances or home-wares, but I still have the same problem.

Can someone give me a crash course on branded items and any ideas of what to get her?

  • ah, the old ozbargain mantra, how to enjoy champagne on a beer budget!
a friend who i consider quite frugal told me this once, get an expensive looking champagne or wine glass from $2 shop, take out of box, stick a label from a better known brand to bottom, wrap in flashy wrapping paper, tie with ribbon, curl ends etc voila! the appearance of luxury but at a fraction of the cost, i would probably do this for a work employee or annoying relative but maybe not for my sis

  • $70 iTunes cards on special at 25% off?

Buy her some Chinese knock off "big brands", since that's only she cares. $50 is more than enough to get that kind of hand bags etc.

  • How about a manicure or pedicure voucher, if u can find one suit her location and doesn't look crap. I am sure she likes to make herself pretty too ;)

Go get a card and write down,
    www.ozbargain.com.au

She will know, wow, that is the right place.

  • How about nothing? We (myself, brother and sister) haven't bought presents for each other for a long time. Or pay for an experience not another product and piece of junk they really don't need.

    One Billion Dollar Zimbabwe Note!

  • Pandora bracelet if she's into jewelries? I was given a Pandora bracelet & charms for my Farewell & absolutely luv it. Most girls like jewelries ;)

If your sister likes cooking then buy a master chef branded book. She gets a nice looking book and you get to eat nicer food when you visit. Its a win win really :P
My friend did that with his mother once - he brought a piece of a new desert to school everyday for a week. Best 30 bucks he ever spent.

Chanel Lipstick @ $50. If you get it from the Beauty Boutique it comes in the Chanel wrapping that all the girls tend to eye. If your sister is into luxury brands she'll be able to spot a knock-off from miles away!

Funny people offering advice like budget Australian only "luxury" brands such as Mimco or Oroton. It's like buying someone a Honda Accord when they are into Maserati's.

    • 100% agree with your every single words :)

  • It's just that I'm too cheap to care about luxury brands. Even if I had the cash, I don't really buy into that sort of stuff. ;)

If names are important, I can give you a pair of undies with my name in them. I only wore them a few times to a school camp when I was at school - the teacher made us write our names in them so that we didnt lose them.

  • Chemist Warehouse has good discount on branded fragrance

For instance Calvin Klein CK One 200ml Eau de Toilette down from $79.00 to $29.99.

Then with the remaining $20 spoil yourself here

Find a photo of a happy time when you were both kids, reprint it and get a nice frame. She'll get over the brand thing, but memories are priceless.

Just buy her a birthday card with the word "expensive" written on it.

Don't give her anything, and tell her if she's expecting something then she is materialistic!

I recently had this dilemma as well. I was pretty close to a friend but we drifted apart throughout the years and I was invited to her birthday. She was the kind who liked branded things as well. I went for a Glasshouse candle. I can not rave enough about the candle! A large candle is $40 at David Jones and can cover the room with just the lid open! I got her Rio de Janeiro (a very likable scent), and she called me to ask where I had got them because she wanted to gift her mother one!
