64GB MicroSD not reading on Dell XPS 8700

I have a HP Envy X2 (32 bit windows 8.1) with USB ports, SD reader and microSD card reader.
I have a Dell XPS 8700 (64 bit windows 8.1) with USB ports and a media card reader (page 4) including a SD card reader.

I also have a microSD card to SD card adapter & a microSD card to USB adapter

Issue 1

I have a SanDisk 32 GB Class 4 MicroSD HC card, using a FAT32 file system. My X2 can read this with its microSD card reader, SD reader + microSD card to SD card adapter, and a USB port + microSD card to USB adapter.
My XPS however can only read it with a USB port + microSD card to USB adapter. The SD card reader + microSD card to SD card adapter does not seem to work for some reason, can anyone explain why? A normal SD card works when I put that in the SD card reader. EDIT A 32 MB SD card works, but a 2 GB SD card also doesn't work.

Issue 2

I just bought a Toshiba 30 MB/s 64 GB Class 10 MicroSD XC I card. Again my X2 can read this with its microSD card reader, SD reader + microSD card to SD card adapter, and a USB port + microSD card to USB adapter.
My XPS however can only recognise it with a USB port + microSD card to USB adapter. The SD card reader + microSD card to SD card adapter does not work again. Furthermore when I do plug in my microSD card using my USB adapter, my computer gets slow and unresponsive and, looking at task manager, the active time for the microSD is stuck at 100%! I formatted it from exFAT file system to NTFS and the behaviour persists. The second I unplug the microSD my computer returns to normal. What can I do/buy to get my microSD card working on my XPS??? If I had to guess I’d say the microSD-USB adapter wasn’t designed for class 10 cards, but that’s just a guess.

If no-one can help, where else should I post this question?

SD cards should only be formatted using SD-specific software, such as this: https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/

Note that the site also says, "SDXC memory cards inserted in the direct SD slot on a computer may require the installation of an SDXC driver"

    • Does that page apply to microSD? And I formatted it as a last resort, the issue was present since I first received it, before being formatted. Why can't things just work…

    • "SD cards should only be formatted using SD-specific software"

Sorry but I am going to call a spade a spade, and say that above statement is a load of BS.

It's perfectly fine to format most type of cards with the inbuilt Windows, OSX or Linux utility provided you know what file system you want to end up with. SD cards definitely not being one of the exceptions to that rule.

OP - if the card works in the XPS with an external reader but not with the inbuilt one then I would say that there's a problem with the inbuilt reader. Definatley try a driver upgrade from the Dell website. It's possible that your inbuilt reader is fine with up to SDHC but not SDXC cards. Failing that - If you don't like having an external reader, perhaps you could get a pcmcia/express card to SD reader adaptor. They cost around $5 on eBay and will sit flush inside the machine.

Get an el' cheapo Android phone, they mount the micro SD card very well to computers. Also, it's probably a device driver issue you've got with your USB SD card reader, I'd go to manufacturer website or google the model to see if others have had issues with it as well.

Might want to check if you get issues outside your OS as well, try booting off a linux live CD like Ubuntu to see if you get the same problem there, then you'll know if it's your hardware or software. If it's your hardware you can call Dell and log a warranty job, if it's software you could probably try system restore or use the recovery partition as a last resort after updating your drivers (especially for your in built front IO ports i.e. the card reader).

Also check your optional windows updates, I remember there being an update for card readers that allows over 4GB cards to function properly.

How much can I expect to pay for one? Isn't there a microSD to USB adapter I should try first?

According to the dell driver website "System analysis complete. Analysis has not found any update(s) that are needed for your system." Getting my computer to search for the latest drivers for it via device mananger returns 'the driver is up to date'. Regardless, here's a list of available drivers and i downloaded and installed 'Foxconn Icon Manager'. Should I download any of those?

Thats sounds hard and complicated and like i could make more serious problems for myself if i do it wrong.

Pretty sure its been like this from when i first received it this year. I've emailed dell through their official support channel.

      Done and installed.
