    No food is included.
The air asia web site has the menu and you can buy on that site.
From memory it is slightly cheaper to go via the malaysian site and pay in ringgit.
The food is of quite good quality, for airline food, and not very expensive. I quite like the nasi lemak, and the chicken rice is pretty good too.
Stay away from the hotdog. It is terrible.

if you were unaware of the need to pay extra for food, you probably also need to know that you need to pay more for baggage too (7kg? hand luggage is already included in what you paid for).
You also need to pay to select a seat (unless you want the airline to allocate you, in which case there is a fair chance you will not be sitting next to your companion)

    • I thought it was 10kg of hand luggage?

Edit: Just checked on their website, it's 7kg. Jetstar has 10kg…

Buy yourself a subway sandwich before boarding, and some bags of chips, biscuits, muffins etc and save money and enjoy a better meal at a time that suits you.

Singapore airport has a Subway airside, upstairs. Not sure about Melbourne international.

    • Strictly speaking, they ban outside food. But when I travel with kids, they cut me some slack. I don't know if they enforce this rule with other passengers

      • +1

They generally don't enforce it. If they asked, just say sorry and pack it away, then bring it back out when they walk past.

Had no problem with Subway and Krispy Kreme from Sydney international. Recommend the nasi lemak on Air Asia.

      • I have never had a problem with bringing food and fruits from home/purchased earlier outside of the airport, no comments at all. Just don't make a mess and it should be fine.

yes, all budget airlines dont provide food for you.

Also, Air Asia flies out of the LCCT terminal in KL which is on the opposite side of the runway to the main terminal. Bear this in mind if you are making connections or going into KL. This is not a great place for transit, and unfortunately it is a hike into town. Pro tip - there is a power point at the side of the KFC where you plug in and charge electronics on the ground side of the terminal while enjoying their free refill softdrinks. There are powerpoints airside too, but they are hotly contested.

    • Not LCCT anymore. AA has to move to KLIA2 2-May. BTW, if you forgot to buy "luggage weight for check-in", you will be paying heaps at the check-in counter if you have check-in luggage.

      • AA have refused to move to KLIA2 and will continue to operate from LCCT. I think that they are trying to negotiate a better deal, plus they say that there are issues with the tarmac. Also, because AA insisted, there will be no Airbridges at KLIA2.

For those who are so good at all these codes LCCT KLIA you might want to go all the way using the right codes.

IATA code AA = American Airlines

IATA code AK /D7 = AirAsia / AirAsiaX (long Haul)

      • On 9 May 2014, AirAsia will be moving to a new home in Kuala Lumpur, which is Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2). Due to this move, all current operations in Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) will be ceased, and will be resumed at the new airport.

klia2 is built with the vision to be Malaysia’s Next Generation Hub that allows seamless connectivity for both local and international low-cost and full-service carriers. Aimed to cater for the explosive growth in low-cost travel, it has the capacity of 45 million passengers a year, replacing Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT).

The new klia2 terminal is measured to be at least 257,000 sqm, with 60 gates, 8 remote stands, 80 aerobridges, plus a retail space of 32,000 sqm to accommodate 225 retail outlets.
Passengers flying on the 8th and 9th May 2014
Guests travelling on these dates will need to take notice of the changes that will be occurring during this transition period. Because of the limited time period given to move all the aircrafts and equipment, several flights on 8 May 2014 will arrive/depart straight to/from klia2. Please refer here to know if your flight is affected.
As klia2 is a much bigger airport compared to LCCT, there will be several operational changes to serve guests better. Please do refer to the new counter check-in policies here.

    • Ah the memories of the LCCT terminal. It's like walking into a 3rd world country (not to say that Malaysia is a 3rd world country). If you haven't been there, be prepared for the large uncoordinated crowds, dirty floors, messy traffic, smoke, humidity and pick-pockets! Correct me if I'm wrong, but has anything changed much since the last 1-2 years?

      • nope, your pretty much spot on ;)

To the OP. Also be careful that you do not pay for the pre-ticked travel insurance (very very tricky). For food, I highly recommend the AA Big Breakfast. You also need to un-tick the 'Maximise Meal' option. Air Asia are Bas-tards with pre-ticking options. They also pre-select baggage weights that you have to change if not 'as desired'.

  • premium economy comes with a free meal and a bottle of water. If not, then you will have to pay for it

  • The meals provided are cheap and yummy. It is A$5.00 for one with 1 water , much cheaper than what you got in our food court. Anyway one has to eat, eh? Luggage allowance is 7 kg. I seldom buy the unnecassily luggage allowance, but I never fail to buy the allocated seats as they tend to put you and your partner if you are not doing so. After all AA is a budget airline, and they have to survive after giving you very cheap airfare, why complaint?

      AA is a budget airline

AA isnt a budget airline. AK is

      • +3

obviously people are referring to Air Asia as AA. I doubt any reasonable person would think otherwise based on the topic.

  • +1

Food and drink are cheap and plentiful on AA. $5 or so for a meal. Beer is about $3 iirc and coffee about $1.50.

Also last time I flew long haul with them (3 years ago but booked for Xmas this year) if you gave them a $au50 they converted it and gave you Ringet in change. Good way to convert some tax money :)

    • +1 Cheaper than at the airport. Buy some titbits to take on board.

  • Yep you have to pay for everything (blanket, food, water etc). Make sure you have cash as they don't accept cards on board at all. We didn't pay for assigned seating and all 4 of us sat together just last month on flights from Gold Coast to KL to Phuket. Also if you need to check in a bag pay online for it because it's a lot cheaper than adding checked luggage at the airport.

  • +1

Others have said most things above already. But yes, you need to pay for meals, check in baggage is extra, and you have a default travel insurance ticked that you shoul have unticked. seems you bought tickets already.

Although if you didn't notice the meals, you really should (dont' want to be mummy here) pay attention booking something of importance as this. The checked in baggage, meals etc are all tick options and processes you go through to buy your ticket - so how you missed this I don't know?

BUT! You can login to your itinerary online and pay to add in checked in baggage and food.

Like someone said, buy your luggage/food earlier - it's cheap enough online, but not at the counter.

DW about picking seats (you have to pay) as from memory they assign you a random seat number every time anyway I've been. In the past it was free for all, no assigned seating. Stupid idea tbh as just caused chaos and mayhem.

Wouldn't worry about KL LCCT airport - i don't kno why everyone above is mentioning it but the OP mentioned he bought tickets to singapore, not KL?

    • +3

If you travel by AA, you cannot get to Singapore without going through KL.

      • I thought it was changed? I stand corrected though. I also used to go via sg to kl but i believe via tiger or tiger to sg then air asia from sg to kl - so perhaps that's what's muddled me up.

  • I had 18 flights on Airasia in the last 12 months with only one flight delayed for a short time, I took one flight with Jetstar & had a 3 hour delay. The meals are good & at around $4 are cheaper than any of the horrible junk food someone listed that is available in terminals. Of course I prefer Asian food to that stuff (I'm not Asian) & at 178cm & 73 kilos fit into the seats just fine. I'm looking forward to using the new KLIA2 terminal, I heard AirAsia was not going to use the airbridges but I think that has changed, I'll see in August/September when I take six more flights with them. I advise that you read everything carefully when booking & when leaving KL do the self luggage check-in or they will charge a few &&&'s at the counter.

  • The food is good and very cheap!

  • if you are travelling with kids then do not pre-order the kids meals for them. the kids meals on airasia flight are unappetising hotdogs. the adult meals are great. take plenty of snacks. take cash (AUS$5 notes are best when leaving aus) to buy bottled water. the bottled water is cheap but if you don't have cash then, unless you order a meal, you won't get any water. they don't accept coins. I had $20 in loose change and had to ask other passengers if I could exchange coins for notes as the airline wouldn't take coins.
