Recovery of files on 500GB external HD accidently quick formatted, any software better than Recuva which didn't recover them?

I tried a full deep scan, after Recuva said the green files were excellent no overwritten stuff, when I recover them, files not readable, is there a better, FREE recovery software that you use and can recommed, Recuva didn't do it for me… the files are ISO files. Thanks.

    I successfully managed to recover my hard drive a month ago using PhotoRec - It's a little fiddly to begin with but once you get it to run it shouldn't cause any dramas.

    The whole process of recovery took a little under a day, so keep that in mind.

    Thanks, I'll try it today, just want to know if Testdisk and Photorec are one and the same program as I can't find the download file of Photorec just for Testdisk.

    Metroplex78, Yes it is the correct download. Extract/uncompress the download, open the folder and run photorec_win. It runs within a command window.
