No Standing Zone Fine

Hey guys,

I was recently snapped stopping in a no standing zone last week.

I had just scraped the bottom of my car (no visible damage, just scratches underneath), so I pulled over to the side of the road to have a look to see if there was any damage, there wasn't really, so I got back in my car to drive off.

Just as I was getting back in, a parking inspector came along and snapped a photo, I asked him what he was doing and pointed out that it was a no standing zone.

I explained that I was just checking to see if my car was scratched, plus, I genuinely didn't see the "No Standing" sign, and I wasn't causing any hazards of inconveniences.

He said if I go now, it'll be fine, even though he's already snapped a picture.

Should I trust him or should I expect a fine anyway?

From what I understand, it is like a council parking fine, i.e. they print the fine off and hand it to me. Or is it like a traffic fine, which is sent to you?

Cheers.

why dont you wait until you get the fine before you start worrying

You'll definitely be going to gaol…. for a very long time hopefully.

My thoughts exactly. People as sick in the mind as OP deserve to rot in hell. Literally worse than Hitler

I agree. I wish they would reintroduce the death penalty. In fact why not bring in roadside executions for these sick, depraved animals?

The inspector will usually issue the parking fine on the spot and place it onto your wipers. Unless if it's a split second fine e.g. no stopping/standing and the offender just drops their passengers off for a few seconds and drive off. The fine will come in the mail.

But was the 'scratch' incident so serious that you had to pull over and not observe the parking rules? Would it have been better to drive to a safe parking zone and then check your car?

    • As he said, he didn't observe the sign and didn't see it as causing any inconvenience (double width single lane rd perhaps?)

  • No standing means you can stop for up to 3 minute to pickup and drop off

Provided you are within the car

(Something along those lines, it's in the rta manual)

No stopping means no stopping at all

      Sorry my bad

It's in reference to no parking

No standing’ areas will become ‘No stopping’ areas. Even in instances where the sign has not yet been changed, the rules for ‘No stopping’ apply and a $189 fine will be incurred for any violation. If, however, you stop in a ‘No Stopping’ zone that is in an operating school zone the fine is $243 and 2 demerit points.

  • NSW?

    "No standing = no stopping"

Otherwise double check with your state's road authority =)

Your story sounds like he let you off because you genuinely did not know, however I do believe they are able to send fines through the mail (e.g. if you chuck a runner and they've got a license plate)

  • I stopped in a no stopping zone briefly in NSW to drop someone off about 20 years ago. Didn't see any parking inspectors around. No one approached me or said anything but a bus did pull in behind me.
Couple weeks later a fine arrived in the mail…
Most expensive drop-off I've ever had.

    • Ticket inspectors can be sneaky bastards sometimes. I've seen many who hide behind bushes to snap people who drop off others for just a second or two. Do they get paid commission based on the number of tickets they write?

I rang Frankston City Council a few years ago and asked for some advice on longer term parking near the TAFE, in particular the situation in a side street. Guess where the parking inspectors were out in force next morning.

  • I was booked for parking more than the designated 30 minutes. no tyre chalk, no piece of paper under the windscreen. With these days of technology, sometimes you don't know until the bad news arrives in the mail.

  • I genuinely didn't see the "No Standing" sign,

They often have a coloured line at the edge of the road.

As an aside, I really wish they'd put some sort of markings on the road at school zones. It's too easy at times to be watching what other traffic is doing, or whatever, and not notice a the sign.

  • I'd say you're fine. I've come back to my car to find a cop photographing it. I told the cop my mistake, he let me go and I never got the fine. They must have discretion.

  • You asked him what he was doing, expect a fine because 'attitude towards law enforcer'

In NSW, they are legally allowed to do either or both.

There is no legal obligation to give it to you by hand.
