Vacuum Cleaner and odour remover for car

I am wondering what kind of vacuum cleaner I will need for cleaning our my car & removing odours from carpets and upholstery (I'm assuming a wet & dry vacuum cleaner will do the trick).

Found one at Kmart, but they require connecting the unit to the cigarette lighter socket in the car.

Are there any cheap units which can be recharged (similar to a Dustbuster, I guess), that will also remove odours?

Will need it for vacuuming up sand, dirt, flowers and plant matter, fluff, etc.

I currently live in an apartment, so I am unable to leave the car with doors open and unsupervised, nor can I use a 240V vacuum cleaner, as the only power point is in the wash bay.

no, buy your rechargable vacuum (or if you are handy then pick up a corded one from an op shop and convert it to take the battery from your cordless drill) and use some "odour" spray.

  • What I do is remove the carpet and hire one of the carpet cleaners from Woolworths and then shampoo them. They come up great and the whole car smells nice once you put it back in. Of course you need to vacuum them thoroughly before hand with a good vacuum to remove all the dust, dirt etc.

    • Great idea, my car carpets are fairly crappy, and we live in an apartment complex, so may not have the room to do the Woolworths shampooing.

      Great video doing exactly this!

  • What about those steam cleaner things they have at the cash wash?

  • Use a regular 240v vacuum cleaner. The cigarette lighter 12v or dustbuster type are junk, underpowered, weak and fragile… generally useless.

As for odour… cant beat leaving the car open to ventilate. Regular household carpet deodoriser will also do the trick… leave in on for 24 hours before vacuuming off. Don't leave it on there permanently.

  • Just go to a carwash that has do it yourself.

Bi carb powder is great for absorbing smells.

  • +1

Wet a rag and wring it out. Put a drop or 2 of Nilodor on rag use to wipe over upholstery. Take care it might corrode plastic. Does a great job.
