Laphroaig 10yo Single Malt Scotch $69.99 at ALDI Online

590

One of the best Single Malts IMHO - got this as a present years ago and have been a huge fan ever since. Got an email from ALDI with this at $69.99 along with a few other interesting single malts - a few of the items I don't know but am posting as some of them seem really good on price. Email says they are online only so I don't think they'll be in the stores;
Laphroaig 10 yo 700ml ALDI $69.99, Dan Murphys $83.99, First Choice $85
Isle of Jura 10yo ALDI $59.99, Dan Murphys $69.99, First Choice $72.00
Also Talisker 10yo $62.99 ALDI no great bargain as Dans is at $63.90, and First Choice at $64.90
They also have some Muirhead's but I don't know if that is a good price as I've never tried it and you can't find it in Dans or First Choice.

edit: arbitrary expiry date added

Pretty good deal. Although one has to wonder the state of the OP to be posting this at 10:30am on a Sunday morning :)

  • Yeah Laphroaig 10y a great drop if you like a good smoky peat single malt !!

  • Postage is $7. Will Dan's price match this?

    • If I remember from the past, they do price match and sometimes even beat it.
I have sometimes price matched their own stores in different suburbs.

Nicks is doing a Laphroaig 10yr old 750ml for $69.99 (same price as the 700ml bottle from Aldi, but an extra 50ml).

    • $15 shipping to sydney kills it

      • +3

Edit: Bought 3 from Nicks so free shipping :).
        Thanks!

      • Free shipping for orders over $200, bought a 10yr old and a couple of the Select Cask.

The Select Cask is a bit of an interesting one, but that's starting to get off topic.

      • ALDI does free shipping for orders over $300. I did see last week though they did free shipping for orders over $150. They seem to do this every couple of months. Worth keeping an eye on.

The Nicks deal does seem good though on the Laphroaig though!

    • +3

Nicks also has a higher ABV value, 43% vs Aldi's 40%.

    • Thanks! Bought 3 from Nicks too for the free shipping. Very nice. :-)

If you asked me to guess what store to buy this and gave me 30 guesses I wouldn't have come up with Aldi. Aldi is anti name brands- I don't get it.

    I'm obviously behind the times.

    • +2

When it comes to certain things, they still provide brand name items. E.g Nescafe

    • +4

Yeh, I'm a little surprised too, but they have buying power, and while you could sell no-name vodka that tastes identical to Smirnoff, it's arguably impossible to sell an imitation of a single malt like Laphroaig. Same with a lot of better quality alcohol - and there's always a market for it that a company the size of Aldi can use to draw profit and market share. They do sell the classic 'Aldi selection' of drinks you'd expect as well though!

      • +4

at least they are not trying to sell a French single Malt Whisky called La Frog

        • Haha - I'll keep an eye out for that one…no doubt it's on their radar now!

  • Both times I have tried Laphroaig I found it to be overwhelmingly peaty. I much prefer Lagavulin, Glenlivet or Glenfiddich. I am yet to be accustomed with its taste and struggle to finish it each time I order it.

    • Let me know when you next try it, I'll help you finish it off!

    • +3

If you want to give Laphroaig another go, maybe have a try of some of the older expressions I found the 15yo had a milder, less phenolic taste. Another one you might want to try is Caol Ila (cal-eelah), another Islay malt with a lower ppm count than the Laphroaig.

Glenlivet and Glenfiddich unpeated, and pretty much on the other end of the scale. If you ever wanna check out some stuff similar to these but less well known (and IMHO better), check out Old Pulteney (pool-tnee), or Glen Elgin or even Dalwhinnie.

.. sorry about all these unsolicited suggestions. Whenever there's a whisky thread I get sucked into putting in my 5c.

    • Yep, Glenlivet and Glenfiddich are both unpeated. Not sure why you'd be referencing them as a point of comparison here at all.

I really like Laphroaig. Oban is another really good scotch if you like them smoky.

  • Does anyone know if you can pick these up for the same price in store? I've got Dad visiting for Easter. He's a bit of a fan of Ardbeg, Lagavulin, Gelmorangie etc. I am tossing up between this Laphroig, the Lagavulin 16 year old for $89 at Dan Murphy or the Glenmorangie 18 year old for $109 at Jim Murphy.

    What y'all think?

    • +1

The Isla's don't age terribly well due to the intense peatiness being lost over time. But I did like the Lagavulin 16 as it's got the peat monster characteristics but without the rough edge of a young spirit.

      • Thanks for that, I haven't tried any of Dad's single malts for a few years, so was a bit clueless about the current vintages etc.

I went with 2 bottles of Lagavulin and 1 Easter egg for him.

      • I went to the liquorland franchise that's on the store locator part of their site, walked 3 floors of the mall looking for it. Went into the Coles to ask them where the hell it is. The shift manager tells me there never has been one in the building.

Ended up at Jim Murphys and got them both for $180. Cheers

    • If you're in Melbourne, Nick's has a store in Doncaster. Some of the staff there are pretty knowledgeable as well.

  • If you haven't tried an Isla, this is a good starting point.

  • Those who like their smokey peaty drops check out a bottle called Octomore.

Had the pleasure of sampling it at a recent whisky festival. It was deliciously face numbing.

    • Octomore 6.1 is $170 at a whisky bar in Melb at the moment (if they still have stock)

Don't think I've tried scotch, does it taste like say vodka? Maybe it'll keep me warm on cold wintry nights. Can't I purchase it in-store?

Uh-uh, I doubt I'll be buying this anytime soon after doing a simple search.

Don't think I've tried scotch, does it taste like say vodka?

      Are you serious?

      • -6

Well of course I'm goddamn serious. No one I know drinks scotch. In fact scotch drinkers have a bad rep (highfalutin, ostentatious) in a lot of circles.

        • +3

No need to get your panties in a twist. I'm not sure how old you are (maybe you're underage?) but I do find it surprising that you've never had, and don't know anyone who has had, scotch. And it's relatively common knowledge that dark spirits have a very different taste to clear spirits. Furthermore, I'm preeeetty sure using the words "highfalutin" and "ostentatious" to describe a group of people kind of makes you both of those things.

    • +3

No. Scotch is nothing like vodka. NOTHING.

It is a sin to even suggest that!

      • -3

Vodka is unflavoured, and scotch whiskey has 'sediments' that imparted flavour like dirt(peatiness). They say it tastes like diesel.

        • +5

Vodka is alcohol distilled to as pure a state as possible in a reflux still.. it doesn't matter too much where your mash comes from when distilling like this so you can use the cheapest source of sugar to feed your yeast (corn, potatoes, wheat.. whatevs). The ethanol is diluted with pure water and the whole thing is filtered through activated charcoal to get rid of any flavour that might be left. It is pure alcohol with pure water. The aim of the vodka distiller is to produce the cleanest, most flavourless spirit he can. On the plus side it will give you the least hangover effects, per mL of alcohol consumed. On the minus it tastes like ethanol and water, and is best consumed in shots together with some savoury hors-d'oeuvres - pickles, herring, cured meat etc.

Malt Scotch whisky is distilled from 100% malted barley (a relatively expensive product, that requires time, space and labour to produce). It is distilled in pot stills, of various designs which are designed to keep a lot of the flavour of the malt. It is matured in ex-bourbon casks, and often finished in casks that held wine, sherry or other aged beverages. A blender will taste and blend whiskies from casks of different finishes and ages to produce a consistent product that expresses the characteristics of that particular distillery. All of this requires a long amount of time, space and skilled labour. All the effort is there to produce flavour. Good malt whisky is designed to be sipped slowly and enjoyed for its taste.

Peatiness is a result of the barley being toasted over burning peat - originally this was a result of a lack of coal at the distillery, and an abundance of free peat in the area (such as around Islay). These days a minority of whisky drinkers have developed a taste for peat - most people (even whisky drinkers) still find it unpalatable. If you're starting out with Scotch, I'd recommend trying Dalwhinnie, Old Pulteney or Glenmorangie.. milder flavoured malts with hints of vanilla and fruit without too many challenging notes.

Excellent post, rather than laugh & down vote the guy, you actually spent some time trying to educate him & anyone else willing to read. Highly applaud you efforts Sir.

        • Interesting, maybe I'll try it someday and change my mind but I only drink rarely, in occasions where I give up and try to fit in, or am sad, or I'm trying to feel less anxious socially.

I really try to avoid that drug.

  • Does anyone know how Muirhead's compared to other Speyside Single Malts? The 24yo seems like really good value compared to anything else out there at that age. I need an excuse to buy this one… Anyone tried it?

    • I'll tell you after I get mine. ;-)
My "excuse" is I want to try it…
I believe, like many things in life, the taste is very subjective, so unless you try one yourself you won't know whether it's a good value or not.
Tasting notes seem to be pretty good based on quick Google search, price wise it's looking pretty good too.
Just get one & see what YOU think.

  • Thank you OP.
Started with 1 bottle of single malt, then added some wine and $270 later I'm done. ;-)
I have to say I was pleasantly surprised at some of ALDI's offerings.
    Good stuff.

    • My order arrived this morning.
Perfect condition & super quick shipping.
      Big thumbs up to ALDI.
