I'm looking at replacing my current Navman MY50T, as it freezes regularly, turns itself off, and my wife finds it difficult to use.
My pet peeves with Navman are:
1) I find their mounts break fairly regularly (and for no good reason), their locking arms seem to last about 6 months to a year before requiring a new mount to be brought (I have owned 2 different units, and several mounts);
2) Their software on the MY50T is sluggish and freezes fairly often, which can cause logistical problems.
3) When driving some streets display the incorrect speed limit (which is a minor concern, but may cause some issues for my wife).
4) My wife hates the Navman user interface and finds it confusing.
so I'm looking for a device with the following:
- At least 4.7” Touchscreen
- Lifetime Maps
- Built-in Live Traffic Updates
- Premium Safety Alerts, speed & red light camera warnings, School Zone alerts
- Smart Find Keyword functionality
- 3D Junction Views
- Spoken Street Names
- Digital Logbook
- At least 2 year warranty
- Advanced Lane Guidance
- Over 600,000 points of interest
- Petrol, Parking & SOS Shortcut buttons
- More than 1GB internal flash memory
- Micro SD extension card slot (current unit has this, although I have never used it).
- Fuel Type Search (would be good for finding diesel).
- Driver Fatigue Alert (would be nice, but not necessary)
- Parking Assist
- Reversing Camera Functionality or compatible (found it quite useful in a rental car).
- Location Capture
- Travel Books
- Live Data Search (although not often used).
From a quick google search these look like the main players:
Garmin nüvi 3597LMT
Tom Tom Go 500 (but only seems to have 3 months of speed camera warnings, whereas mine is lifetime).
Tom Tom Via 280
Tom Tom Via 225
Navman 400LMT (which I have read bad reviews about)
Navman 450LMT
Alternatively, a good GPS app for a smart phone (iPhone or Android, my wife has an iPhone, and I prefer Android).
