yeah so my breville sandwich press died just 15 years out of warranty (I hate that).
so many toasted sandwiches, so many happy memories.
Now I need a replacement.
obviously reliable but inexpensive.
what can people recommend?
thanks

Always recommend the deep dish ones. Makes it so much easier to do a toasted egg sandwich, as well as those "larger" fillings. http://www.breville.com.au/the-big-onetm.html
Depends if you want 4 sandwich or 2 though.
I have the Kambrook one in the KMart link at home and at work.
Heat up quickly, and even cooking.
I prefer flat not ribbed plates and chose the Breville BSG520 (not to be confused with the BSG220) to replace my previous Breville which lasted nearly a decade.
My only complaint about it after almost a year is that the top plate won't easily sit/settle completely flat/straight/horizontal - the cord connecting the plates affects the balance :(
I'm sure it's been on sale for ~$40/$45 somewhere but in the meantime…
$49 - https://www.jbhifihome.com.au/TOAST-N-MELT-2-SLICE-PRESS.asp…
$60 - http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/buyonline/Breville_The_Toast-M…
Of course you might like a jaffle maker instead :)

We bought a Sunbeam Toast N Grill after using someone else's. It wasn't all that cheap but does a great job, and as the name suggests, can be used for grilling as well as toasting.
DON'T opt to get an elcheapo one. We initially did, and sandwich fillings were always dead cold around the edges.
If you want a flat plate press, we got a Ronson one at Target that is performing well.
In the end end I went for this Kmart 4 sandwich ribbed bad boy for $39
cooked 4 sandwiches well. cheese melted in the centre well.
Mrs Altomic wanted a ribbed one. comes with a one year warranty so if not happy with it then…
The ladies always prefer ribbed.
