Overcharged by a mechanic

I needed new tires for my scooter.

[edited with more info]

The mechanic

a) not only overcharged me
b) he also gave me cheap tyres instead of Pirelli I expected. I checked the brand few minutes ago after I got email from him.

The original quote was for the original front tyre size of 100/80/14 and a matching rear tyre in 120/8014 size also as I told you this size was not available at this time , they were on back order .

When you came in you told us that you had done research on the internet and found that in Europe they use a 110/80/14 front tyre and you instructed us to fit that size front tyre to your scooter. We then had to find a matching set of tyres in the size that you specified and that is why the pricing changed as these tyres were in a different brand . I hope the is explains why the difference in pricing .

The email is just big lie. Why would I refused the recommended size by manufacturer while saving $90 at the same time???

The original quote was:
Pirelli 110/80/14: $65
Pirelli 120/80/14: $95
Fitting: $140

The reality
Sava MC 26 Capri 110/80-14: for $95.65
Sava MC 28 Diamonds 120/80-14: for $135.7
Fitting $148.01
Freight $20

Kymco Super 8 125cc is supposed to have 100/80-14 at the front but it is not in Pirelli's catalog. He told me he is gonna try to find 100/80-14 somewhere else and call me the next day. The next day he said he found the right size, but it is $135 + $20 freight instead of $65. So I Googled if I could use the 110 and found that yes I can. Therefore I asked him to go with the original quote.

After little research I can't find how much the Sava cost, but they are considered "budget tyres" so likely even less than Pirelli.

Comments

  • did you ask if price included fitting + balancing and whatnot?

  • Quote for fitting was $140, charged $148 which is ok.
Freight $20 wasn't quoted, but I understand it cost something to get it into the shop.

    Nothing else.

  • Yeah that's just shitty. If a customer comes in and says i need new tyres, how much will it cost me?

You expect to be told what it will actually cost you… simple.

  • freight shouldn't be counted unless they shipped it to you… very dodgy. Care to share the name of the place?

  • "I did not, to be honest it was my first encounter with a mechanic ever."

With anything that requires a service component always ask is that the complete price and also get something with the Total Cost written on it.
It is a wonder that they did not include a disposal fee for the old tyres which is standard practice everywhere these days.

LOL…. Beware when the day comes that you are a home owner and you have to hire tradesmen…. now those critters are the slippery ones :-)

    • Yea well, I'm from the Czech Republic where I expect to be fuc*ed up of money :-D
I become too trustful in Australia

  • Edited the original post with more info - he also gave me "budget brand tyres" instead of Pirelli I expected while overcharging me by more than $90
