Exetel is discontinuing its $15 month mobile phone plan which includes $500 credit, no lock in contract, operates on the Optus network. Any recommendations please?
nb. I have my own phone.

Vaya mobile, it changed my life!

I pay $18/month as a moderate user on wifi most nights.

+1 for Vaya, $18/month for $650 credit, unlimited SMS, 1.5 GB data on Optus 4G, no contract.

Live Connected's $19.95 plan used to be a slightly better deal (data billed per KB instead of MB), until they started ripping off new customers with their price rise.

      • +1

Wouldn't you waste several hundred MB/month being charged per MB instead of KB?

        • Isn't it only excess data that is billed per MB?

That would be ridiculous otherwise. Every your mail app or whatever scanned the inbox you'd clock up a MB. Gmail must do this almost every minute meaning 60mb/hour that you're connected… unless I'm missing something, which I probably am.

        • +1

Scratch that, I emailed them and it's for any data use, per session. So if I use iMessage to send a text, that's 1MB gone.

Definitely not going Vaya now. Check out the whirlpool forums, loads of people having trouble with data over charging and horrible customer service.

        • +1

Not quite, as long as you're connected to 3G uninterrupted, your phone should keep a session open. Things that contribute to closing a data session (and then subsequently opening it when required) are: losing reception, switching from 3g/2g and vice versa, connecting to wifi.

Other than that, the session should generally stay open. The phone does not open a new session for every message! You may notice your usage increasing slightly though from the per mb billing

Amaysim $19.9 plan includes 500mb data

  • +2

    TeleChoice $20 - 12 months contract.

    Telstra 3G.
$500 worth of credit including international calls.
    1GB of data.

    • Would you kindly give a review on your experience with TeleChoice? Currently on Voda and looking for a better deal.

      Cheers.

      • I moved over about 3 weeks ago from vodafone, and have found them to be fine.

Ported easily and relatively quickly. Data connections get a bit wonky at the mcg, but I don't think any network survives that!

I'm inner city mostly, and haven't had a chance to test out their coverage more remotely, and would be curious to see how that goes.

or stack lebara (2 months validity) sim from Groupon current deal

also, consider vodafone prepaid starter pack at 15$. Having said that my both recommendations will serve you for short period only.

Thanks for that Vaya reccomendation. Seems like same features on the optus 60ish plan… but at less than 1/3 price…

    • +1

Also with less than 1/3 the service.

I've been with them for ~18 months and they've been great thus far.

Although if you have issues which need to be resolved, their customer service is apparently pretty terrible.

OVerall I'd recommend - just hope you don't need to deal with them!

  • thanks so much guys for all the above info xxx

  • +1

Yeah Vaya is the best value for money with excellent customer service. I looked at heaps of different deals before I moved and I couldn't believe how good the $18 plan is ;)

You can also refer your mates and get one month credit. Bonus ;)))

Ps for the post above Live Connected own Vaya (or it could be the other way around?)

  • Having been on Vodafone for a while, I'm looking to change.

How is Optus coverage and data speeds compared with Telstra on a Telechoice plan?

    • Depends on area..Few people here are on Amaysim and had great experience with them…some had great experience with Telstra..

    • +1

I was with Vodafone for a few years. I moved to Optus (via Vaya as the provider) cause data was slow and calls kept dropping out. The data is so much faster/more reliable and calls don't drop out unless coverage does. I find Telstra too expensive for what value you get from the plans.

  • +1

Ah man, I was with Exetel too and they ended my $8/month for 200mb/morecallsandtextsthanIcoulduse
They will kindly allow me to stay with them on a plan double the cost and with half the data.

I'm keen to head with my wife to Vaya's V2 18 plan, but a bit bummed to have missed the first month free promo.
Does anyone know of any promo codes or anything that can be used to save spending $38 for the first month - $20 'delivery' fee seems a bit of a joke…

  • +1

Don't know the codes sorry but to clarify the delivery fee is for the SIM card. Still expensive but most companies charge that when you're not on a contract ;(

Ps not sure if it'll help but free Vaya to Vaya calls ;)

  • Pretty much wither TL$tra or Voda now for data. Some slop about undisclosed session mgt policy prevent me from going other. Prepaid all the way so they won't steal / waste time.

I am looking for a better deal also, this one looks great, but I would have thought the TPG offer was much better, given it's the same price ($17.99/month) and is billed per KB not per MB, so you'll end up getting more data.
TPG appear to charge a $20 SIM card fee, the same as Vaya and they both appear to use the Optus network from what I can see?

    • +1

From memory tpg is only 3G though vs vaya 4G

      • +2

Ah right, so I guess it just comes down to whether per KB (more data) is more important than 4G or not, ok interesting :)
Do either of these guys have dealers to avoid the $20 delivery fee?

        • Sadly no. I tried to get it free from Vaya, but the best they said they could do is if I wanted more than one mobile to go to Vaya, I could get the second one free.

    • $17.99/month?
I can only see contracts (here) starting at $19.99/month with 100MB Included Data.

      • +3

http://www.tpg.com.au/mobile/plus-plans.php - Includes 1.5GB Data but no included calls for $17.99.

Holding onto my TPG $14.99 $550 + 1.5gb plan for dear life… couldnt care that its 3G, its dirt cheap and does the job!

        • Same here.

Data charged per KB + free social networks (Facebook, eBay, Linkedin etc) + unlimited calls to other TPG customer.

I am still convinced TPG are losing money by letting us hold onto these plans.

I just wish I didn't miss the Virgin Mobile deal, with 1.2GB for $20 a month on 4G and charged per KB, I just come out of contract today and the offer only just expired, at least Virgin don't charge for new SIM cards/replacement SIM's and I have a shop close by if I need to speak with them or get a replacement.
I wonder how long it will be until they offer something like that again?

    • +1

Yeh I missed the Virgin too. I'm going to stay with Exetel's $20 4G plan. It's only 500mb but I think that should be enough, seeing as it's charged per KB too.

    • let me know if you hear about any new, similar offers

  • Has anyone got a better deal for a teenager, mainly needed for data. Cheers
