Foodie culture

Cannot believe the $ ppl now spend on food over other types of entertainment. Friends of all ages seem to regard eating out as the exemplary social activity but also to dress it up as adventurous, discerning, politically engaged (organic) , and an everyday thing. To me it is just a combination of gluttony, mid class aspiration, and a lack of imagination. I cringe when i see cooking shows using religous words like divine, heavenly, bliss and frame the chef(cook) as an important vocation. I see murder when someone tells me how amzing their barrista (cooffee maker) is.

How does the descent into foodie culture sit with ozbargainers who must hold a latte and compute that since milk is$1 a litre and a 5kg tub of instant roast is $9 that this fad is for the sheeple

Cannot believe the time ppl now spend on starting ridiculous discussions over other types of entertainment. Friends of all ages seem to regard absurd posts as the exemplary social activity but also to dress it up as adventurous, discerning, politically engaged , and an everyday thing. To me it is just a combination of ego, boredom, and an over-active imagination. I cringe when I see OPs pretending religious words like divine, heavenly, bliss are blasphemous in a non-religious context and frame tweeting as an important vocation. I see murder when someone tells me how amazing their selfies are.

How does the descent into social media culture sit with ozbargainers who must hold an iPhone and compute that since sand is 50c/kg that this fad is for the sheeple.

    • This is a confused attempt. Try again

      • Very appalling that you didn't include a selfie in there somewhere. Hmm tweet what I had for breakfast yes no? hmmmm..

I'm sure people would be appalled at some of the choices you make regarding how you spend your money. Their money, their choice.

Everyone has different likes and dislikes. Some people like to enjoy their food and see entertainment and value in that.

So what if people like a good coffee and have found a favourite coffee shop or barista. Not everyone can live on instant.

  • Hahaha, this thread is great!

You guys and girls are hilarious.

Some fair points here, but ultimately, you should spend money on how you see fit.

People spend money on food or try new places for an experience and with good company. They keep going back to places where the food was great and was good bang for your buck. Moderation is key guys. Price, well, it might be expensive, but if you enjoy it that much, you're going to spend it.

Spend money on video games because you enjoy the experience and story. People who are gamers enjoy this. You can put it down to addiction etc. but I don't believe that's accurate. With everything you enjoy, or enjoy too much, there's a danger you might get addicted, and that's where self-will needs to be implemented.

Movies, clothes, gadgets, etc. etc. Spend money on what you want, what you enjoy and what will add to your experience and happiness in life. Be reasonable, and there's nothing wrong with it.

I never drank coffee before, was always bitter with no sugar, then found this great little cafe here near work, $4 a pop, but tastes good. I don't get it everyday, but every now and again. I enjoy it, it's in moderation, so it's money well spent for me.

Just don't be that guy/girl who doesn't spend money on anything, spend on what you want within reason and in your budget. Not rocket science.

And everyone else? Well, you will still take a picture of your food, post it on your preferred social network, check-in because you forget to and tag a few friends. Everything is in order ;p

Sometimes I feel like ozbargains users think this is ozfrugal/spartan. Just because something may appear to be wasteful to you, for another person may give them their weekly joy and such.
Plenty of good reasons why people pay a higher premium for certain items, not only food. A nice top. A nice pair of jeans. Nice shoes. A comfortable/faster Car. A better Suburb (We will ignore the investment aspect). A better holiday location.
I think, a Bargain at the end of the day is just a lower price or a cheaper than regular price. Just gotta respect everyone's different interest and spending habits, and if you don't keep it to yourself and be satisfied with your spending habits. Perhaps to them, paying off the mortgage isn't as important. Nor is being able to retire at 55 (or however much).
