Householder Insurance claim for 'lost' keys

I'm trying to do my very elderly neighbours a favour and am seeking advice from aficionados of household house and contents insurance.

They have about 100 old keys for all their locks and screen doors and have got themselves into a real muddle. I have suggested they get them all keyed the same, which require replacing about 10 lock barrels. What does he need to say to the insurance company with whom he has never claimed, to get them to cover at least part of it?

    The truth?

Anyway, replacing a lock barrel isn't difficult. Ten barrels would probably take about half a day.

Check their insurance excess first..excess may costs more than replacing the key barrels.

What about tell the insurance company they are getting new security screen doors (and new security screens for the windows) and new good locks for all their doors… to make the house more secure, that way, the insurance company may reduce their future premium.

  • Ok thanks for the suggestions NancyCat, will follow up both yr suggestions.

If they were able to do it themselves, I wouldn't be asking.

sounds like insurance fraud, unless it is explicitly allowed for in their policy.

Checking excess and advising new screens is not fraud. The original q is designed to find out that advice is out there. If you having something constructive that would be helpful. The keys are lost ….
