$1 store credit for new sign up - worthwhile?

Hi

I know it's not much, but I'm keen to get some feedback on our new affiliate system

Basically, customers are offered $1 for new sign up and $1 for the referrer if their friends make a purchase

Thoughts? Blast away please,I'm keen to get everyone's feedback

  • Wouldn't make me sign up just for a $1 unless I was actually intending to buy from the site in the first place.
It would have to be something like 5-10 dollars (you can implement a minimum spend to prevent abuse?). Or a 5% discount.

Personally I don't like store credits with minimum spend. You might as well offer a discount voucher instead of store credit

Most people don't care enough about $1 store credit to sign up and buy. If you want people to sign up offer something people want cheaper than anyone else and post it on ozbargain. Even if you make only make 1 cent profit you'll get some signups and if you ship it fast people are likely to consider buying from you again.

  • $1 credit? stuff that

In all honesty, no, $1 would not be incentive for me to sign up.

Something like first order free shipping (if it's feasible) or a % off your first purchase would make me click on a link to find out more… but reading "$1 store credit for new sign ups" would not make me curious to sign up or browse your site / consider buying something.

    That's just me though :)

    • That's me too

  • Thanks for the feedback guys,

I guess my biggest concern about first order discount (percentage off) is the code will be shared around.

Rather than having it assigned to the person who actually bothered with the sign up.

Also because it's an incentive for new customers, it will defeat the purpose of existing customer make use of it.

This is a sensitive matter, because the question goes. why shouldnt existing customer have the same benefit… well that's why my reasoning for points instead of percentage off.

existing customer already receive a store rebate on their previous purchases, so they are not left out.

i hope i'm making sense, and thanks for the feedback peeps.

    • I'm sure you can make it a unique sign-up one-time code so that it can't be spread around.

I don't get what you're trying to say in the second half. Are you saying it's unfair for existing customers since they can't get a discount? You've got to implement it at some point. I doubt an existing customer would get annoyed they missed out on the discount.

      • Maybe I have in the past

So I'm sensitive about doing this

  • pointless

sell me a good product for a good price, dont stuff me around on shipping and you should be good

      Not a valid comments

Simply because the store credit can be applied to any sales

  • I don't see why you feel the need to offer any sort of monetary incentive to lure in customers. If it's causing you so much concern to implement something in case it is abused, and the offers you are actually comfortable with aren't really appealing enough to us (and most people for that matter)… why bother with it at all?

I agree with the above comments that it is quite pointless and unnecessary. IMO, if you end up doing $1 off, you might as well scrap the idea completely as the effort for you will probably outweigh any benefits in gaining new customers.

Businesses that can afford to offer really juicy discounts for new customers shouldn't really make you feel pressured to compete with such tactics. Offer stuff like that if you can, but if not, don't worry about it.

Just make an honest business with competitive prices and let that do all the work for you - people talk, word of mouth will win more customers than flashing a dollar at people.

If anything, an offer of one dollar could offend some people lol. Is that all we're worth?!

    • it's an incentive for word of mouth referral, AKA affiliate

it gives the person inviting and the inviter a reason to take interest in the email.

It differs from walk in or promotion (sales)

  • I think you also need to look at it as advertisement costs. Even if you lose money, if things go to plan you'll gain good reputation on Ozbargain which should in turn increase sales for the long run.
