Your Gumtree Experience

Yes, I bag Scumtree every now and then. But seriously, what's the cheapest and/or most expensive thing you bought and/or sold at Gumtree?

Do you meet at home or outside?

  • Only things I have bought:

Bose QC3 headphones for ~$300 (few years back). Work magically, love them.
    Dehumidifier

    Sold tonnes of stuff:
    Old world globe
    Wooden drawers and shelves
    Old furniture
    Subwoofer
PS3, PC and PS2 games and accessories
    Books
    Music mixer

Can make a fair bit from it all :)

  • I've sold the following:
    - Canon 6D camera + lenses
    - Macbook Pro
    - Canon 1100D
    - Nikon camera (forgot model)
    - Macbook Air 2011
    - iPhone 4s
    - Lots of other stuff

I've bought a lot from there as well, I generally like to buy items and then re-sell them because I have a very short admiration span. Something like lust.. doesn't last very long. I've even had inspections of buying a motorcycle.

Generally I meet the seller at their place or at a common area. I've never really had anyone over at my place. The most reason sale was last month and sold it at McDonalds parra westfield.

    Key things you should note:
    - Cash only
    - meet face to face
    - public area meetings is best
    - when selling, list item about $200-300 higher than what you want — to allow for slight haggle

Sure there are a fair few people who are out there to scam you, but as long as you meet face to face and deal cash person-to-person… it should fine! (If they're suspicious, just ignore them).

I've had people asking me to send the item via shipping and that they'll pay via bankwire/transfer because they're overseas. These are definitely scams so just ignore them as well.

I've sold heaps of stuff, barcode scanner ($1000), mobile phones (around $200), watches, textbooks.

Most of the time I'll meet the person in the CBD, Melbourne central clock.

This one time though, I posted up an ad for a phone around 7pm, got text messages in poor grammar at around 10pm saying "blah blah…I'll pick it up now, where r u". I'm thinking isn't it a bit late to do this? So I reply saying lets do this tomorrow. Then at 12am I get another message from the same guy saying "I'm here in the CBD now, where r u?" and thought this was sketchy as because it's super late and I didn't even agree on the deal. Obviously didn't end up selling it to him and sold it to some other dude who actually called me up and was much reassured by his voice than those text messages.

  • I bought my sony duo gen 2 from gumtree for $900 when they were retailing at the time for $1700, picked it up from the buyers appartment on the 17th floor of the building, sure the buyer had no reservations about showing me where they lived but i'm not sure i'd allow buyers to pick up from my residence though and certainly wouldnt allow them inside.

  • i sold mac air and bought mac pro retina ….both deals i do was at train station….it got security camera so my cash is safe :D
and least i bought is a heater for $5 lol works like gem

for me +1 for that tree with gum

When I moved into my rental I got heaps of freebies (clean and good condition) from generous people.
2 x Couches, Sofa bed, Pine table with 4 swede chairs, TV Unit and Lamp.
When I eventually move into my own home I will give these items back to the Gumtree community.

I always advertise at very good prices. I put up a price I would jump at if it was an item I wanted to buy.

As soon as someone tries to negotiate, instantly cancels any chance of them picking it up from my house. If they don't accept that I will not negotiate after a first request, I tell them the item has sold. If they straight up accept my price, I don't have an issue with them dropping around.

I deal with people out the front too. Letting strangers see your valuables is a bad idea.

  • Bought car for $2K, Motorbike $8K. Both times did a REVS check first + Licence (Rego) check to make sure all kosher before fronting. Cash for car, direct transfer for 'bike. All good.
Use G'tree a lot to get players for Club teams. A bit like fishing at night, sometimes good results, other times nuttin'

  • Both major buys I was invited in, met the "other half" and had a chat while we went through the paperwork. I think it was the fact that rego papers had to be farted around with opens both sides to the other. Obviously not the same with phones, laptops etc.

  • I love gumtree :D

Sold a pair of oakley sunglasses. Posted it and within 15mins had someone outside my place with the money
Also sold my xbox 360, ps3 , 2 24' monitors all within 2 days of posting and got what i wanted for them

Bought a 2nd hand roadbike full carbon that was hardly used with the gear and trainer for just under 1k ( around 3k retail )

Bought a 3 seater and 2 seater recliner for $90 and a coffee table for $10 which was an absolute steal.

I have heard other people have issue with gumtree ( time wasters etc) but my experience with gumtree has been A+++

  • I sold a jailbroken Apple TV for $250. Not bad seeing as I originally bought it for something like $100 when it was posted on OzBargain, and owned it for 1-2 years.

  • Both good and bad experiences with GT. The worse was a set of alloys with tyres which had done only 2000kms. Sold them for less that half the cost of just the tyres. Guy calls up all enthusiastic about the used tyres and I put off my plans to go out for 45 mins. Turns up and he goes the tyres are used… I was like the title says "Used tyres 2kms" wtf did you expect. Spends another 15 mins rolling the tyres around and then goes they are used tyres, the new tyre red line markings have faded a bit and wanted them for cheaper. At that point I just asked them to get out. Relisted them on gumtree and two guys from Canberra drove up to pick them up no issues. Sometimes you just get people that don't think you time is important.

  • Sold a few times on GT, some hits and misses:
-55" LCD for $800, gone smoothly.
-Jamo speakers for $350, guy agreed on price but turned up with $20 short. He wanted to give me some loose coins but still short by a few $, so i gave him my bank AC details for $20 transfer. He promised to do that next day, the money never shows up, did not reply to my phone call either. Don't mean to be racist but he was Indian and drove a relatively new Mazda 3, so i didn't think he would run away with $20, lesson learnt.

    • +2

If you don't mean to be racist, why mention he was Indian?

Do you go around complaining about people and stating they were white?

Do you go around complaining about people and stating they were white?

        They're called 'bogans' :) haha

        • That's called isolating the problem.

It's a cop out excuse used by the western society to separate them from unsavory people.

but when it comes to ethnic people its always racial issue

      • If you don't mean to be racist, why mention he was Indian?

It's a comment about social status from a third party viewpoint, go play the race card somewhere else…

    • Well it was up to you to scold him for being a pathetic waste of your time and refuse to sell.

Your gut knew he was dodgy but you still took the money.

  • What is the problem, sold and bought many using gumtree at sellers or buyers place or wherever it suits for both parties, never had a problem.

I have used Gumtree for many years. I have sold three phones on gumtree. One was $850, another was $700 and the third was $500. (They were all brand new and purchased on a plan).
I have also sold a voucher on here (Ozbargain) for quite a few hundred dollars.

I never allow haggling as I always price my item below the going price on ebay so there is always ALOT of competition amongst buyers and I pick the most genuine one or convenient one.

I always meet in a neutral place like a shopping centre.
    I only accept cash.
I always count the money before I hand them the item.
I always make them check that everything is 100% before I walk off.

I always meet them alone, but have my boyfriend waiting around the corner for me (so as not to scare them).
Once I let them pick up from my house as a last resort. However I made sure my boyfriend stood outside with me when that happens.

Doubt anyone would try anything funny.
My boyfriend is 6'3 and built like a rugby player :)
I also have a very big and crazy dog.

I have purchased a freezer from gumtree. Best bargain ever. Was told it was about 4 years old (he wasn't sure as it was a friend's). Called up manufacturer and it was only 18 months old (from the model number). Was told they have a different model number posted for the year of manufacture. Only paid $250 delivered for a Fisher&Paykel. Cheapest brand new freezer I could find in the size I wanted, some no name brand was $600+. 2 years on, freezer is still working perfectly and silently.

  • I got an iPad Air 32Gb cellular for $450. I called them within 2 minutes of the ad being posted, and was at the sellers house within 15 minutes. Needlessly to say she said she had heaps of calls in the 15 minutes it took me to get there.

Yes it came with the box and charger and receipt - it's only 3 months old, on warranty :)

    • How did you snap that up so quick?!

      • Evidently, he called her first..

  • I sold my canon 5dmkII through gumtree for $1300+ and sold various lenses for hundreds to a thousand dollars without any hassle. They came to my place and paid by cash.

Last weekend, I just sold an entertainment unit for $350. They guy came to my place and picked it up. No drama.

Been buying stuff from gumtree too, mostly cheap stuff, since I tend to buy from shop or friend for expensive ones.

If you are the seller and the buyer is coming to your place, it would be good if there is someone else accompanying you at home, just in case, for witness or security.

  • i bought a set of expensive wheels interstate recently, I had arranged for a trusted person locally to pick up but when I realised he was a member of a certain forum it was ok, but usually I would pick up or no deal from gumtree. I did purchase a waterblock for my graphic card for $50 interstate and the person didn't reply for 2 week and I had sent him multiple emails and in the end he replied saying he had sent it and he apologised but due to the bush fire he couldn't get my stuff sent out.

    I felt bad

  • +1

I would just like to add, how sick I am of lowballer offers. Like, listing a $450 bike and I get replies saying "I'll pick up tonight for $100". No where in the ad did it say that I was desperate for the ad, but it did say "Serious offers considered". Idiots.

    • So true! I was selling something for $500 and I got constant messages for people wanting it for $100-250, was crazy! Were these people serious.

      • They might think its stolen…

  • Depends. If the item can be fake or potentially not as described, then I will meet them at their house and have their phone number, no exceptions. I mean for items such as a RAM as they could be giving me some crappy DDR2 256MB stick OR event tickets, as they could be holding a spare and scam me. If I know where they live and have a number, I could call the police.

If it's something cheap I don't mind meeting up.

I'm being a bit hypocritical here, but when I see something I don't want people coming to my house. If it breaks in like three years, I don't want them knocking on my door asking for refunds.
