Nearly $900 Worth of Discounted/Free iOS Apps for Autism Awareness Day

71

April is Autism Awareness Month, with April 2 declared Worldwide Autism Awareness Day by the United Nations. To celebrate, oodles of developers kindly set their apps to free or reduce their prices for a limited time during the month.

I usually list every single app, but with there being a total of 156 apps I figured it would be better just posting the links below. Our website uses referral links:

AND as a little extra bonus Toca Band has gone free too: http://www.smartappsforkids.com/2014/04/free-app-alert-best-…

Thanks!

How does downloading free apps help autism?

Why don't they just donate payments from sales into research instead.

I agree with this autistic man.

April is awareness month so it makes people aware of autism I guess.

I'm guessing its less about helping "cure" autism than providing a little bit of relief to parents of autistic kids who might be able to benefit from being able to get the apps? Though the cynic in me knows it's a ploy for app makers to push pointless games.

A lot of the apps in this list are Speech Therapy or assistive communication apps that allow non-verbal people to 'talk' and are directly very beneficial to people with Autism Spectrum Disorders as opposed to developers donating money to organisations such as Autism Speaks that only pass on 4% of their profits/donations.

    Thanks!

  • I think this is spam, I clicked on the link but it doesn't give any means to see the list of 'free / discounted' apps. also the poster does not even appear to be a developer, they seem to be merely advertising their own services.

    • What link are you following? I can see the list of discounted/free apps fine with links to the appstore for each of one.

      • I Clicked on the go to deal button

        • That's weird I can see them via that link, I'm on a tablet, maybe if you're on a phone the page comes up different.

        • OK, got it now scroll down two pages to see the list. However, on first view I see: an ad for Speech By Milo (no discount when you click on this) and a crap load of ad words (of various kinds) at least 13. I don't think I have ever had to look through so much garbage to get to the actual 'deal' and I really use the term loosely.

        • no adblock?

Hi, You're correct in that I am not a developer—I never claimed to be. I work for Smart Apps For Kids which is an app review website that also posts daily about kids' apps that are free/discounted. All of the links are working perfectly fine for me, though some people with ad-blocking software have trouble accessing the site.

      Thanks,

This makes me really angry, if you look at the page, it is merely a cacophony of AdWords of various types wrapped around a couple of lists and a blog purporting to be a service. I have a child with Autism and develop Apps for kids with special needs (as a hobby I don't make money from it) and I am sick and tired of people trying to get their cut of the Autism Dollar.

That's great you're developing apps for kids with special needs, are any of you're apps suitable for kids with aspergers? If yes could you send me some links please they would be great for my sister who has a child with aspergers.

      • Thanks Blackrose, I am working on a Schedule app and I have a couple of smaller apps as well (One i call Big Words and a reward app) I really just keep them to my son and a few friends until they are a bit more mature. I work full time so progress is always incredibly slow :(. BTW they are Android… don't get me started on this whole obsession with iPad thing :)

        • They sound good seedy, yeah I tried to convince my sister to go Android but she went with iPads as she was a little familiar with them, and she knew a few other parents with iPads so it made it easier for her.

Totally agree, my son has ASD and people that exploit kids with it and families should be jailed. We as parents of these wonderful kids have enough to deal with. OZbargain should ban anyone that is trying to take advantage of them.

For the record three of my four kids have Autism Spectrum Disorders (1 boy who has Autism and 2 girls with PDD-NOS under the old DSMIV as well as a handful of other diagnosis's between them) so trust me when I say I have enough to deal with on a day-to-day basis. I have also seen the huge positive impact that interactive, educational, visual apps have had on their education, social skills and communication just to name a few areas.

I take offence at you insinuating that I am in some way exploiting kids and families who have to deal with ASD. I have put hours upon hours into organising developers to set their apps to free/discounted so that parents can get apps that they need/want for their kids for cheaper during Autism Awareness Month. I think its a credit to developers-especially those that are willing to set them to free that they want to take part in the event to help our kids.

And I believe that anything positive that raises awareness about ASD is not to be frowned upon.

        rant over

I'm impressed with your writing. I'm also annoyed for you re insinuations. Perhaps your website could be better but that doesn't make you a crook. Good on you for posting here as well as defending yourself. It can be a tough place to make friends here.
