DC-AC Inverter

Hiya;

I have a 24VDC battery setup with solar panels in my shed (was cheaper & easier than getting 240v run from the house).

The inverter I have doesnt have an 'earth' as such, only a casing earth which it states is if the inverter is used in a vehicle/boat then you ground it to the chassis.

Is this normal?
Should I earth the inverter into real 'ground' just to be safer?

I also want to use a plug in safety switch for added protection (it IS 240VAC coming out of the inverter!)

Any info would be appreciated, a lot of into already online appears very old & outdated.

Thanks
Nigel

    It's normal to ground a Vehicle battery to the body..
    I think it would be safer to ground your setup to actual ground though.

    Well if the appliance is being used inside a vehicle, then the vehicle chassis is the appropriate "ground".

    Since your appliance is used outside a vehicle, then the earth is the appropriate ground.

    In a boat you don't have much choice. :)

    And yes, you are getting 240VAC out of the inverter. The waveform might not be perfectly sinusoidal but it will be good enough for appliances.

    • If it is a pure sinewave the power coming out of the inverter will be "cleaner" than grid power

    It sounds like it is an isolated supply and I don't think a safety switch (RCD) will trip as there won't be any current flow via earth.
