Good cheap racing game for PS3?

Looking for a nice car racing game for my son. His birthday is coming up soon and on a budget. Any help appreciated.

Gran Turismo 5 if he wants something realistic.

Or Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit if he wants something that doesn't take itself too seriously.

    • Thanks

      • hot pursuit for sure! kids would prefer an arcade racer over a simulation racer anyday im sure.

Split/Second for something truly outrageous, if he doesn't mind something a little older.

    How old is your son?

    • What's outrageous about it?

Buildings falling down on the track, jumbo jets landing on the tarmac where you're racing… it's totally ridiculous but lots of fun.

        • split second is brilliant

i'd get it on ps3 but i finished it on pc already

Gt5 is way better than Gt6 right now but I honestly think Gran Turismo is an adult game given its complexity

          Wipeout is also good

          Driver San Franciso is ok

    • Thanks

    • I remember playing this with a friend couple years ago now. Great game. Will most likely get this one, thanks!

  • I'd go with Midnight Club Los Angeles.

Almost impossible to finish, as there is so much to do.

Is open world and has the deepest car customisation system in a street racing game.

  • Uh, ModNation Racers or LittleBigPlanet Karts? Since everyone has already suggested all the regular vroom vroom serious racers. Basically, in a nutshell, Sony's attempt at Mariokart.

Leans a lot towards character customisations and level creating if he's into that.

Both can be picked up beneath $20 each due to being a few years old.

  • For arcade racing consider anything from the motor storm series. Apocalypse is the newest but heavily discounted due to bad timing with Japan earthquake :/. Pacific rift an oldie but a goodie, my pick. Pacific rift Online servers no longer running if that impacts your choice.

    • Seconding Motorstorm Apocalypse.

The pretense is that for some reason you're racing in the middle of natural disasters. So there's giant earthquakes, buildings falling over, tidal waves smashing in and what not.

The driving engine and graphics are pretty solid too. It's great fun.

If your son is really into his cars, GT5 is a good option that can be had pretty cheap, but it can be a bit… sterile for anyone who doesn't eat sleep and dream cars.

  • For the extreme casual racer, above titles like Modnation Racers or Little Big Planet Karting could be a good option, and if you want the latter, you could always just sign up to Playstation Plus at the moment at get it as a part of the price - http://au.playstation.com/playstationplus/

For the fun racer, older titles like Burnout Paradise, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, Need for Speed: Most Wanted, Split/Second Velocity, Motorstorm Apocalypse, or even Blur (Mario Kart with real cars) are all high on that list.

For the hardcore racer, Grid 2 (or the first Race Driver: Grid), Grand Turismo 5 (avoid prologue), or Shift 2: Unleashed all have their elements of tense racing.

Almost (if not) all of the above games are in JB's 2 for $40 pile, which you could find cheaper elsewhere. Take your pick.

    • ridge racer 7 and ridge racer unbound could be ok
