  As the OP posted you need to download it via the free Apple Store app (not direct from iTunes) to get it free ie, https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/apple-store/id375380948?mt=8
  
  Note Smart Coin Requires iOS 7.0 or later (so I couldn't redeem it via my iPod Touch Gen4) :-(
  
  Update: I entered the generated code from the Apple Store app via iTunes on my PC and redeemed it there fine (When I get an iOS7 device I'll be set to go) :-)

Saw it yesterday and was going to post it here, but downloaded and played with the app… Meh! Not as good as XE.
