What to do with my old router?

Hi all,

Just switch from Optus cable to Dodo adsl+ and the Netgear CG3000 gateway becomes redundant. I've done a brief search online and it seems like it's an Optus branded model. I dont see an option that turns this thing into an AP.

I would like your recommendation on the unit, here are some of my thoughts but not sure if any of them are feasible:

  1. Resell it. Would anyone buy it since every cable contract comes with a router.
  2. Hack it to be an AP. Any Linux distro works on it? OpenWRT, DD-WRT etc?
  3. Let it rot in the garage (sad coz it's got the best wifi signal out of all my other units)

What should I do?

  • 4.Give it to me?!

You could gut it out completely and reuse the parts (in some other shape or way). You may never know when you'll need that particular part!

.5. Just store it indefinitely in case you need it again in the future.

This is your best option. People will still buy it, probably to replace their dead/broken router.

    • Yeah but I doubt I could even get $40 out of it lol.

      • you are right

i bought a replacement for 5 bucks when mine died

admittedly it was a bargain price but the seller had no use for it and would rather see it gone to something useful than rot in his garage

  • Why the switch, dodo?

      It's internet that dies flies!

heres a great little game you could play if you have more than one router (buy some more if you need to, theyre cheap at msy), first tuck your shirt in, then stuff as many routers as you can into your shirt haha classic. try to beat my highscore of 9 routers

  • I seem to lose one to a thunder storm every few years, so I would hang on to it.

  • you genernally cant hack modem routers

    i keep them as spares

typically you pay $40-$90 a month for unlimited internet

i wouldnt trust a $40 router unless i had another $40 router in the back configured the same so i can drop it in if theres an emergency

    • I am done with cable though. Going back to ADSL so I dont have to pay a premium.

  • You don't need to hack it to make it an AP.
See http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1921854 regarding turning off NAT (you'll probably also need to turn off the DHCP server) - and also about people turning off the WiFi on this device due to problems and replacing it with another AP…

  • how has your internet speed changed from cable to adsl?

    • I dont know whether it's a valid comparison but these are the facts:

      Optus cable with premium speed pack ~ 90mbps - $110/pm - 500G - unlimited national/mobile calls
      Dodo adsl2+ (250m from exchange) ~ 21mbps - $60/pm - unlimited - no calls included

Both service has an international speed cap in peak hours. I stream from Twitch TV and both cap me at 500KB/s even though Optus has a longer capped period from 6:00pm to 12:00pm as opposed to 7:00pm to 10:00pm with Dodo.

Well that 9MB/s download was certainly thrilling but 500G cap and $50 extra has tipped the scale.
