Fighting for Refunds | Virgin Australia

Hi All;

Just wanted to get some pointers from the OzBargain Community.

February 2014

Thought I'd be sneaky and ended up buying a one way fare from SYD to JKF (NYC) via. LAX. This set me back a lot of money — $1,700 with Virgin (stop laughing, I know — I'm an idiot). The flight was to depart 27 December 2014.

March 2014

Discover that I can get $1,750 RET SYD > LAX with a youth discount. Prepare to book that ticket and cancel my other one. I booked a "Saver" fare, which is classed as an 'E' Class Ticket.

So my recent fight with Virgin has been over refunds.
On their cancellations section of their Website, it states:

If you are travelling in N, E class the following applies: (Cancellations are… )Permitted up to 24 hours before scheduled departure time — AUD500 and any residual refunded to original form of payment.

This is ideal for me, because I'd buy the new tickets, offset my $1,200 credit against my new $1,750 debit. Pay $500 for a return fare? Yes please. However, the delightful Nepalese people on their support phone line are telling me differently, that either:

Any money refunded will go onto a Travel Bank Credit (in line with T, Q and V rules)[The travel agent cannot utilise this credit, alleges the Nepals; or
I won't get a refund at all

Apparently the words "Australian Consumer Law" and "Department of Fair Trading" don't mean much in Nepal.
I'm thinking of booking the cheaper tickets, and then fighting with Virgin for as long as it takes up until 24 hours before departure.

TLDR;SHUTUPQW3RTY-ITS10AMONATHURSDAY

Booked expensive flight
Found cheaper
Cancelling older flight
Told I can't get a refund/will be given a credit that I can't utilise

How do I proceed?

Cheers,

You might want to send a PM to Donga100

They have something to do with Virgin, and also have great travel knowledge, that transends airline brands.

They will at least explain how it works if it is indeed not possible

Just got back from a week overseas so haven't been checking the forums. Send me a PM with your reservation number and I'll take a look at it. It sounds like you can probably get a refund but I can't be sure. If it's possible I should be able to direct you to the right call centre to make it happen.

  • What type of are was the original ticket?

  • How did this work out?
