Disclosure Requirements for Car Insurance for Personal Import

Hi

I have a dilemma. I am trying to insure my 'Personal Import' car.

Should I disclose the car is a personal import? The Online quote forms do not asks anything about it and also its the same car as what is available here in Australia (Audi A4 TDI) so I really don't have any modifications (as per the definition on the forms).

Any views will be much appreciated.

Cheers
Mark

Ring the insurance company. Shouldn't be an issue though, as I'd imagine the same risks would be associated with an ADM model.

I asked a rego official about this ages ago. He said that after compliance, the car is treated like an ordinary domestic registration. At any rate, I would call the insurer - it may cost a little more now, but it would be worth it to make sure they don't deny you a claim in the long run.

  • Thanks heaps that helped. It looks like it's really dependent on the insurance company..

Please refer to the PDS - many insurers will not cover a grey import or personal import.
The only ones I know that will are:
Just Car and Shannons (same underwriter but last I checked Suncorp and AAMI didn't)
    Youi
NRMA/SGIO/SGIC/RACV (underwriter = IAG, RACV is through IAG and is not affiliated with RACQ, RACT, RAC etc)
Some specialist brokers including Lumley Special Vehicles etc.

If you don't disclose your car is a personal import, your claim may be refused in accordance with section 74 of the Insurance Contracts Act PROVIDING they wouldn't have covered you if you specifically disclose you had an import.

  • Thanks alister. As a consumer I am not sure why I should disclose if the car is a personal import when not asked or specifically mentioned. The issue here is this car is same as what is sold here . All the reference on other sites point to personal imports that are generally not available here in oz. But mine is available in oz. I
