4wding & Offroading Newbie after some tips & advice please (:

Hello fellow OzBs,

I recently got a new Jeep Wrangler Overland 2 door (yes, go ahead with the Jeep jokes..) & have been trying to build up a decent size offroading kit. I know that there are quite a few mods out there for the car, but also a bit of gear I need to buy to bring with me.
So far, I have gotten a Warn bullbar, towbar, spotties & a 2" lift kit done on the car.
I've also got some shackles, snatch strap, bushranger air compressor, shovel & so forth.
Took me a while to save since I'm a student & a girl (so a fair bit goes to make up :p)

I know that there are RRP and the 'usual' sale prices out there, so was wondering if any more experienced OzBargaining adventurers could give me some tips.
Just an FYI, I'm in Perth so in terms of car mods, I'm guessing the prices are more than over East.

A little info on me:

I'm a student, so most of the time it's city driving in perth (50 small rds/50 fwys)
On the weekends, I've been heading up to the holiday house which has light-moderate tracks.
I'm hoping to go a little more difficult after I get my gear & take longer trips. (Mainly sand eg. Lancelin or bush tracks eg. Margs, Albany)

I'm looking at these purchases next:

  • Recovery Tracks (I'm told Maxtrax or TREDS brands are best)
  • Air Bag Jack (or hi-lift?)
  • Winch (I know the Ridge Rider has been 50% off at supercheap for a while now.. But not sure on its quality compared with say, a warn)
  • Lightbar & LED Floodlights bar (I've been told these ones are relatively easier to install yourself compared with the other mods, so anyone had a look at an eBay lightbar?)
  • Tyres (This one I'm most looking forward to (: unluckily for me, my model upgraded to 18" alloys, which I've been told will be more expensive to get good muddies. Should I go for All terrain or semi-monster muddies? Also, I've been told that I will probably need to look at getting bigger fenders if I go bigger with the tyres)
  • And probably some more, but not for a while..

Anyways, any help or advice is very much appreciated!
Thanks (:

  • Before you go any further, please properly extend your diff breathers. I know someone who bought a new Jeep Wrangler and went through 3 gearboxes, 1 warped engine (piston), 1 driveshaft etc, all within the first 40,000km / 2 years (it was new). Muddy sludge inside components was guilty most of the time.

    Going through your points:
-Recovery Tracks - only needed if you 4x4 alone or have no diff-lockers.
-Air Bag Jack (or hi-lift?) - high-lift with a base, however I would use a bottle or trolley jack at home for safety reasons.
-Winch - Up to your wallet, perhaps a 2nd hand good condition Warn from eBay?
-Tyres - I have BF Goodrich, Mickey Thompsons get cred. Make sure they are legal, will save you headaches…

  • Consider this: Winch is pointless on sand as nothing to attach to, unless you also grab a sand anchor.
Sand driving is mostly about tyre pressure, 15psi-ish (depends on conditions, tyres, etc).
If sand driving is your main angle, then tyres and air bag jack/tracks would be most useful.

Lightbar is cosmetic. It won't help you ;)

Diff locks are the other most useful accessory, but expensive and again depends on your usage as to whether you really need them.
