Demineralised Water $1.59 for 2L at Coles

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Hi all,

I was going crazy for demineralised water to service my vehicles coolant and top off batteries. After a long search, I think I found the cheapest to be at Coles for $1.59 per 2L, Woolworths came close $1.79 per 2L (Coles bottle looks nicer though). These are not on sale or promotion, they will be like this and only go up with inflation. They are located at the home cleaning aisle.

Other places were just rip off. I have seen $3 for 2L and $6 for 4L. One would have thought SCA and Repco are specialized in these kind of stuff.. disappointed.

I hope this help some people, especially the automotive DIY heads like me. Please do let me know if you know anywhere to get this cheaper than this.

Oh almost forgot, if you have flybuys, after you get these, you can enter their survey for 1000 points thanks to hamza23 lol

I think this isn't really a deal because it's not on sale. Probably better to post in the forums.

does google search look into the forum posts though? I will post one in there just to be sure, in case this gets deleted. I just really want some people to know about this before their next radiator service.

Surely its not a deal, but technically it is still a lot cheaper than other places I've been

  • Coles one is probably tap water :)

Well they sure invested in their packaging :) very nice label indeed.

  • Free deminerialised water from rain.

    • I'm very tempted to use rain water, but I live in a quite dry area so to get about 10L of rain water it is a lot of work.

  • I don't think you need demineralised water for coolant/radiators. I thought the mixing of tap water with coolant concentrate was enough to ensure that the radiator didn't rust - i.e. the coolant concentrate contains agents which stop the water from rusting the radiator.

Demineralised should only be needed for batteries - and given that most batteries are maintenance free these days, the need for demineralised water is reducing.

    • Thanks for your input. Most manufacturer recommend soft water, ideally distilled or demineralized. I don't know how soft the water is in my area so I dont want to risk it. Plus, using demineralized stuff is cheap insurance really, especially on modern cars where water passages in the engines are so small, they are easily blocked. An overheated engine can lead to a blown gasket and all that.

You must be buying too much if these small differences in price matter that much to you…

    • Yea I know not that much difference but I like to stock up on these instead of going to the store everytime I need them. So I buy 10-20L in one go. At 20, the difference is $10. Also I have 3 cars and I drain and refill coolant every 2 years regardless of what manufacturers say.
