Buy dental insurance 1-day before the teeth extraction surgury?

Dear Ozbargainers,

I personally just received by Medicare today and 2 weeks later I'll have my surgery to remove 4 wistom teeth which would cost me $970 just for the surgery (Excluding hospital fee and anathetic thingy).

Did my research online and found out that I can take AHM Super Extras one day before the surgery, claim around 700-800 and cancel it after the surgery since AHM guy's don't have waiting period on teeth extraction.

Just wondering if any of you guy's has done anything like this in the past? this deal seems too good to me…….

Think that might be illegal/dodgy practice as you know of a pre-existing condition and surgery you will be having.

Don't quote me on it though.

      That is one concern…

I have checked other insurance companies, they all had 12 month waiting period for existing conditions. But I couldn't find such a thing on AHM website or PDS.

I called AHM earlier today saying that I plan to have my teeth removed and the operator confirmed that there is no waiting period without warning me about any clause about existing condition…

Pretty sure you are on the money here hahaboy; it's already booked, therefore the condition is pre-existing, for which there is a 12 month waiting period (page 3).

Most insurance companies will look for any way to NOT payout; hence they will find a clause in their terms and conditions that makes it is unlikely you will be eligible to make a claim. Insurance companies are not here to make a loss, they have shareholders the same as any large corporation.

I would speak to AHM and get in writing, should you still believe you can signup, claim, and cancel!

I thought you had to buy health insurance for at least a month! Like you can't pay for one day and cancel.

It does seem a bit too good to be true to be honest. Did you ask the operator about exit fees, and minimum sign up periods etc?

  • I'm pretty sure there is a waiting period (2, 6 or 12 months depending on the type of claim) for all insurances. Don't quote me on that. Maybe there's no waiting period for those with higher premiums.

Make sure you get a definite answer because insurance companies will show no compassion regardless….especially something like this which would put insurance companies out of business due to the payouts.

  • A medical insurance policy that you can take out when you need treatment and then cancel when you are well? We all would like that one… :-) I'm not saying one does not exist but it would be popular if it did.

  • Looking at another part of their site, they state 2 month waiting period on wisdom teeth extraction, with $500 excess, with the fine print stating 12 months for pre-existing conditions.

I think that's pretty much been stated already above. I wouldn't go into this assuming you're covered,

  • ahm complex dental has a waiting period but for normal dental you can pay today, claim today - sorry to bust your balloon

ahm lifestyle extras at $33 a month is an awesome deal and i recommend it to everyone!

    $200 optical
    $350 chiro
    $350 physio
    $400 massage
    dental+complex+braces ect…

They also pay a decent amount, its eay to get your value out of this! The next extras up is good if you need hearing to be covered, otherwise go lifestyle extras

I think the wizardofheoz is right there's no waiting period on routine dental which includes extractions, there's no mention of pre existing either. I would get something in writing from them though, maybe send them an email, insurance companies are notorious in finding fine print not to pay.

    • Good idea. I have just sent the email and hopefully I can get a guarantee of cover in writing soon.

  • If you need to go to hospital and go under GA (general anaesthesia) then the extraccions would be surgical and not straight forward, I would assume? They may be categorized as mayor dental and may not be covered, check with insurance if you have item numbers and prices.

    • The actual procedure has item number 323/324 and AHM guys confirmed that those are classified as Routing Dental.

Hospital fee and General anaesthesia are covered by hospital cover which I have with BUPA.

This tells you about the Wisdom Teeth extraction specifically for that insurance company. When you click on the little link next to Wisdom Teeth, it states 2 month waiting period, with the exclusion period increased to 12 months for pre-existing conditions.

  • ahm wave 2 & 6 month waits on extras but ask when signing up to confirm (although they are mentioned) and they dont have the pre-exisiting test thats applied to hospital for extras; so you should be all good to go… again i highly recommend lifestyle-extras as thats worth paying for on an ongoing basis but your free to cancel any policy any time weather you have used it or not…

I signed up my bro the day before he took his daughter in for dental and he claimed the same afternoon over the phone but you can now do it online or at the dental clinic if you have gotten your card
