Australia Post Redirection

Hi Guys,

I have a question and was wondering what other people's opinions are regarding this.

I have recently moved to Canberra for work (family still residing in previous location), as I'm a bit of a closet gaming addict I thought that I would redirect my mail to my new address to avert my wife stumbling on to my EB Games stash. The redirection has been in effect for about 2 weeks and I have received letters and magazines however when my first gaming parcel (New Diablo released Friday) finally decides to arrive, it arrives at my old home address.

It wasn't registered or marked signature on delivery as it was left at the front door and yes my wife is away of my gaming habits - just didn't want to wait a fortnight before I went home again.

Is this Karma? or should I take it up with Australia Post?

Thanks in advance

  • Just to add another note, I have been through their "T&Cs" and from what I can tell unless its an act of war, I should of received it at my new address.

  • +2

Might want to check parcels are part of the redelivery agreement. And that it was in fact auspost who delivered it

  • I was of the impression parcels weren't included in the redirection service, but the T&Cs for redirection state that "articles" are redelivered; the T&C definition states that "articles" means letter mail and parcel post articles.

This said, as Davo1111 raises a valid point given some Auspost services are essentially courier delivery rather than one that relies on your postie for the last mile (eg. Star Track Express is a private courier firm owned by Australia post that uses their logistics network) so if it wasn't something lodged with the postal service for postal delivery you are out of luck.

Second, and perhaps the more OzBargainworthy part of this post is the ability to get free redirection if you're on friendly terms with people at the original location and willing to wait a couple of extra days. It has worked for me after my Melbourne-Canberra redirection ceased.

An often overlooked clause in the general AusPost terms and conditions 21 Redirection after delivery allows for anyone to resubmit an unopened article with Australia Post for free delivery to the addressee's new address.

21.1 Subject to clause 22, where Australia Post has delivered a postal article and the addressee no longer receives articles so delivered by reason of his or her temporary or permanent change of address, any person receiving the article may:
21.1.1 redirect it to the addressee by altering the direction on the article and lodging it for further carriage in accordance with these terms and conditions; …

Now that my redirection has expired I've given my parents a few pages of address labels with:

    PLEASE REDIRECT TO:
    [New address]
    Per AusPost T&Cs clause 21.1.1

My parents simply put a new label over the top of and occasionally drop them in a postbox. If you ever move house you should leave these with your former housemates/the new occupants as they're a lot more likely to pass on important stuff you forgot if it is both free and of minimal hassle to them. As mentioned, this only works if the article is unopened and you're willing to wait a few extra days (as the paid redirection service intercepts it at the mail sorting phase whereas this acts post-delivery)

PS> The staff at the GPO in Allinga Street, Canberra are very helpful of you ever run into any issues.

  • Had a similar issue where the owner of the place we moved out of kept texting us every now and then to let us know a few letters have arrived at the old address. Whilst most mail were redirected to where we were living, a few do miss it and slip through the cracks. Australia Post makes all efforts to redirect mail but cannot guarantee to ensure 100% of it is. The lady at the post office told me the idea of the service is really to pick up any mail from people/organisations where you might have forgotten to advise them of your relocation.
