Thanks for the finding, really great price for the due drive especially for PC laptop or desktop, however, it states not support for MAC OSX, so not for me right now. From the installation video on the page, it looks like the 120GB is for OS, and after the OS been installed, requires some sort of driver to get access to the 1TB part in windows7, so maybe the mac driver is not ready at the moment. And also hope they could have slight larger SSD version such as 256GB SSD + 1TB.

this drive will always remain notebook intended, since there is no point for any one else to get such a drive if they got more SATA ports or even a caddy for another HDD in the ODD bay.

    • Some mini itx boards only have 2 sata. If one of them is used for an optical drive these type of drives will come in handy. Also handy for Intel NUC too

Top little drive for an Intel NUC, I'd say. This could make its way into my next HTPC.

    • I got an intel NUC, except for lowest end model with Atom CPU, the Core I ones allow Dual Hard drive which one is the faster Msata / PCIE and one Sata
Hence a setup of getting a 128GB Msata and a 500GB traditional drive made out better performance than this odd ball dual drive

    • 1TB for a HTPC?

      wut

      • Yeah, that's all I have.. Just delete stuff once you've watched it.. why spend more $$ on HDD space when you're unlikely to ever watch again?
I do keep some classics, but most stuff is watch once and discard. (I'm also quite lazy and only do a wipe once every 3 months)

This would be far better if both the SSD and HDD were two separate independent drives. Reading the reviews its just "one drive" partitioned separately.

The SSD portion of the hybrid is massive though.. 120GB, compared to other hybrids where you might get 8GB at most. Considering some people can live on a 120GB SSD OS partition which leaves room for a couple of games, it's more than adequate if you're used to using hybrids.

This thing would be perfect for a PS4 for instance. You get the capacity of a 1TB drive, which is double what you normally get, and you get the speed of an SSD. And you're not paying near what you would pay for an SSD of this size. I might actually buy one, but I will continue to monitor prices first, and the prices of EVO/M500 960GB/1TB SSDs.

      • god damn just bought a 1tb hybrid drive for my ps4 =( sigh*

        • +2

presumably if it doesn't work for mac then it wont work in a PS4 for the same reasons - no driver for the hybrid side of things.

  • Sorry im not an expert in this field, but are these hybrid drives and dual drives the same size as the standard HDD?

    • its one 2.5" drive as what I understood its differ than hybrid drive (I can be wrong).
it has two parts, the ssd part with 120GB to install the os to improve your computer and a second part 1TB hdd to use it as storage for media

      • I think he was asking about physical size?
To which the answer was yes. BUT check the height (thickness) as some laptops will only take drives that are X height.

    • Its not the standard size of a HDD, its the standard size of a SSD (2.5 inch).

      • Laptops use 2.5" HDD's Puska.. It's a standard size for Laptops.

    • +1

      2.5" Form Factor
Same as a normal Laptop drive.

    • Also note that the drive's height is the normal 9.5mm, so will not fit into the thinner 7mm drive bays.

  • +2

    Is it two volumes?

Or is it one and it intelligently puts the frequently used stuff on the SSD? Like those seagate hybrid drives? That would be awesome :)

    • +1

IIRC the WD Black is 2 Volumes

Sure it's cheap, but you do get what you pay for.

The SSD is just about the slowest in the budget segment of the SSD market and the HDD (5400RPM) is on par with external HDD performance.

PCMag sums it up quite well:

Western Digital appears to have banked on the convenience as a critical advantage, but the overwhelming majority of users can get by on 256GB of storage (for less money) or roughly 400GB for $10 more

Really, no one but laptop users are going to contemplate this and for that price, why not just grab a 480GB Crucial M500 from Amazon? Plenty of storage for most laptop users and it will make a huge improvement to performance (which is really a priority over storage space when it comes to laptops).

Spot on. I was contemplating getting this WD Black2 Dual Drive 2.5" for my Lenovo Y500 laptop which currently has a 1TB HDD 5400rpm. Then remembered I have an empty mSata slot. Just picked up a 240GB M500 instead for USD$117.06.

  • Actually you get good performance SSD 500gb for about the same price https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/137769/

The WD is very convenient for my laptop which only has 1 hdd bay (and a slow 750gb 5400rpm), but given the performance of this device I think I will wait for better models to come.

  • If your laptop takes mSATA SSDs then that will be your better option. Just buy a mSATA SSD and leave the stock HDD in there. Best of both worlds.

  • Interesting idea.

I just bought an mSata for my NUC, was hoping for something local but couldnt wait any longer :(
Depending on how technology moves i can see myself buying one of these a year down the track

Although the NUC apparently supports up to 9mm drive heights but this one is listed as 9.5mm

  • Think I'll wait a few more yrs until hybrid tech fully matures & is within low price range before getting one. We'll all be replacing the WD Reds in our NAS' with these little suckers (3.5" equiv).

    • +1

In a few more years SSD's will be so cheap that hybrid tech will be dead.

I'm quite looking forward to it.
