Lacie 1TB External Hard Drive $149

300

Just received the latest Officeworks Catalogue, on the front page they have smashed the price of the LaCie 1TB External Hard Drive. The cheapest price on shopbot and staticice is $159.95 so thats a saving of $10 over the cheapest competitor + any sort of postage they will throw ontop.

The listed retail price of this drive on the LaCie website is $219.00 so thats a $70 saving over retail price.

The Catalogue starts on Saturday 22nd June, however im sure if you went in 2 days before the catalogue started, they would still give you the drive, as you have to remember that Officeworks dont have "sales" so this will be an "everyday low price" meaning you would be able to get it for $149.

And also buying from a Shop like Officeworks has its advantages, such as easy warranty exchange / return if the drive is faulty, in my past experience they just swapped the faulty hdd for me on the spot. This level of "peace of mind" far outweighs any saving of $10 offered by other competitors.

EDIT / UPDATE:

Have rang a few stores and they have confirmed in stock. Have visited Officeworks in Liverpool, NSW and they have it on show, available to purchase. They had MANY MANY units (a whole shelving display full) estimate around 100+ units. Walked in and picked mine up today! :)

  • saving $10 even? :p though, I suppose if you count postage… :p

  • nice catch

  • cries why did i buy 1 tb from there last week.
I've got a lacie, apart from it being quite big, it's lasted very well.

  • just return it and rebuy it :P
my sister has done that a number of times from a number of different places.

10 bux cheaper, so not that great a percentage, but can go into the store easy, save post. and as you said buying from office works is good.

  • I can't find this HDD anywhere on their website or their online catalog

  • What's the HDD inside ? Nice deal though

  • Deal just got trumped! TopBuy have just posted up a 1TB external HDD with eSata for $139 delivered. Only 500 units so you'll have to be quick.

    • Use a discount code and get $10 off making the Astone drive (WD inside)$128.95

  • No wonder I can't find this on OW website.

I can't see the deal on topbuy either.

    • Topbuy sale starts at midday EST

  • Maybe you can take a photo of the catalog so that we can get the hdd before 22nd.

  • The Lacie enclosure will be better than the ASTONE one. I have used ASTONE ones and though they are not bad, the unit I received was extremely temperamental (essentially did not function) because whoever put it together did not put a jumper on the internal HDD to force it into SATA 150 mode. Admittedly the Lacie does not even have ESATA, but the product generally feels more 'complete' from a reputable manufacturer (and not someone grabbing cheapest 1TB HDD around and slapping it in a case).

That said, I have had a lot of issues with Lacie external power supplies (which, admittedly were rectified) in previous years. I personally would go for the Topbuy unit anyway because I don't have a problem opening the enclosure to chuck in a jumper if I need to :) Just something worth considering.

    • Hi, have you compare the performance between the AStone and Lacie one in terms of USB transfer rate? Does the Lacie USB Boost do anything ?

      • Hi mate,

Transfer rates vary quite a bit on OS used, files copied etc. Unfortunately I did not have the Lacie and ASTONE at the same time. However, the ASTONE with ESATA would copy up to 50MB/s, sitting at 40MB/s for large, sequential files. On USB, it would hit about 30MB/s. But see - the ASTONE is only the brand of the enclosure, depending on what drive you get, your rates could be completely different. That said most drives should still be able to do similar transfer rates especially on USB/ESATA.

The Lacie I used was an older model and I do not recall the speeds it achieved. But with the ASTONE unit I would expect between 40-50MB/s over ESATA.

  • Gonna pick up one of these when the sale starts (sat)!

  • hey guys i can confirm i have seen them for sale at the Liverpool store. seems the stores have received their stock already.

Also, imo still the OW deal is better, due to warranty purposes, also shipping times etc. I personally hate stuffing around with online stores, to save $10 is it worth the hassles? IMO, no its not.

This is still a great deal for a major RETAILER to be offering this kind of HDD at this price.

  • Is it worth spending an extra $20 for a seagate branded freeagent?

    Would love to here opinions

    Cheers

EDIT: And on a similar topic, if anyone cares to share, are there any advantages of a 3.5" extrernal drive over a portable 2.5", maybe in terms of speed etc? I'm in the market for an external drive and dont know whether to go brand name, whether to spend some extra $$ and get a portable one?

  • I was just at OW Carlton and they didn't even have any on sale.. I didn't even see any Lacie drives at all actually.

Will go back tomorrow and probably ask them.

  • Do all OW have the same sales/promotions nationwide? Cause I went to my local OW (Brisbane) and couldn't find it on the shelf. I rang another OW nearby and they didn't have any Lacie external HDD's in stock. Also when I checked the catalogue online I couldn't find it. Maybe they haven't updated the catalogue online? Also isn't the 22nd a Monday not a Saturday? So does the catalogue start Saturday or Monday?

Go in and ask for it. they'll have it out the back, but not on shelves yet.

  • What hdd is it in this enclosure ? please don't be the infamous Seagate 7200.11.

    • Bad news then

its Seagate ST31000333AS… which is the Barracuda 7200.11

      • That justifies the bargain price.

My data is much more than saving $40.

Thanks for letting me know, I almost bought one.

      • Thanks - I was waiting for this sort of price to hit Adelaide stores but found an article that backed up your comment (wasn't hard to find). Guess I'll spend a bit extra on something else…

Officeworks in Auburn had a full pallet of these. Drives weren't on display but when I asked about these, they went to backroom and got me one. Good deal.

  • This is a great deal, thanks for sharing.. I'm gonna get myself one tomorrow.
I have the older porsche design model and I have to say it is a great HDD. It works fast and is reliable. I prefer it over the seagate one I bought.

  • +1

    Finally got my one.

It is a beautiful thing.. now gotta work out how to get the dust and finger print marks off it :p

  • Went to the Ryde OW and they don't even stock them… sigh

  • I just got mine from OW in East Vic Pk (WA). They have a lot 1TB LaCie on the front shelf, but still distributing the old catalog.

It is a Hintachi HD721010SLA360 inside. Quote from http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/hitachi-western-digital-…
Hitachi Deskstar T-series (HDT), 7,200 RPM (72), maximum family capacity 1 TB (the first 10), actual capacity (the second 10), the generation (S) and Z-height (L stands for 26.1 mm), the interface (3 = SATA/300) and the cache capacity (6 = 16 MB)

Just did some performance test using HD Tune

    With USB boost disabled
    HD Tune: Hitachi HDT721010SLA360 Benchmark

    Transfer Rate Minimum : 22.1 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Maximum : 22.7 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Average : 22.7 MB/sec
    Access Time : 14.4 ms
    Burst Rate : 17.8 MB/sec
    CPU Usage : 10.3%

    With USB boost enabled
HD Tune Pro: Hitachi HDT721010SLA360 Benchmark

    Read transfer rate
    Transfer Rate Minimum : 27.6 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Maximum : 28.0 MB/sec
    Transfer Rate Average : 27.9 MB/sec
    Access Time : 14.1 ms
    Burst Rate : 17.2 MB/sec
    CPU Usage : 10.2%

    Hope that helps

I bought one and it seems like its a Hitachi HDT721010SLA360

  • Is there any way to determine the hard drive make / model without lifting the cover?

    • +1

If you are using XP, just right click on "My computer"->Properties->Hareware tab->Device Manger->Disk drives

You will find the drive model there.

  • Guys

I'll probably pick one of these up tomorrow from somewhere else (they'll pricematch too). Question is will it be the Hitachi or Seagate drive? Once I've opened the plastic sealed box I won't be able to return it. Bigheadache mentioned the Seagate and 2 others mentioned the Hitachi - is it just pot luck? If you've bought one and happen to know what's inside please post the info - thanks.

    • "Once I’ve opened the plastic sealed box I won’t be able to return it."

Maybe you can consider getting it from OW, they accept returns within 7 days.

      • unless you damage the box in some way…… i dont think they will accept the return if it is damaged. So be careful / mindful.

In other updates.. seen this Hard drive advertised on the TV so the catalogue must of definatley started now and all stores should have this drive.

  • Well if 'plastic cover removed from box' = 'damaged box' then there will be no chance of returning (I've seen the box and it has a plastic wrapping).

    • As I stated in the above post, you can see what is the model of the hdd inside the enclosure without opening the case physically:
"If you are using XP, just right click on “My computer”->Properties->Hareware tab->Device Manger->Disk drives"

So, no damage will be done.

  • fatice

I did not mean the enclosure, I meant the box it comes in. ie. It comes in a cardboard box that is sealed in a plastic wrapping.

    • If I remember correctly, OW does take return even the plastic wrap is gone.
