Unauthorised credit card payment from "SANDHILL FIG INVESTM SYDNEY"

Today while checking my online banking on my credit card I found that I was charged $40 from a website called
"SANDHILL FIG INVESTM SYDNEY" I did a google search and seems to be a australian company perhaps, anyone heard of it? I will be going to my bank on Monday or give them a call.

should of done so immediately, no need to wait for monday, unless you've forgotten something….

  • Time to do some detective work DEvok.

I occasionally find these randoms on my CC statement, and a little back-tracking with receipts & diary usually matches them up to an errant fuel purchase at an independent servo where I haven't been able to use my fleet card.

I find newsagents to be quite random in their company names.

It will be a small business like a takeaway probably. A Google search shows it to be a company with a single shareholder. That is if it is legitimate and not as you suggest something hinky. Good luck.

  • does your statement give you a date and/or time of the purchase?

  • 21st march this month mate. Never heard of these guys before.

    • IGAs, Chemists and Newsagencies have weird names on my statement too.

      • yeah, but surely he can remember if he spent $40 a couple of days ago.

        • I can't remember what I had for lunch. But seriously if you make a lot of insignificant little purchases, it is quite easy to overlook something innocuous and be surprised by an entry on your statement. I've always found it to be a legitimate purchase I forgot about or couldn't reconcile the statement name with the business name. But it always pays to check.

    • could be a gas station.

I used to word at a bank at we'd get calls like this all the time. It'd always be the same - customer claims they DEFINITELY did not make a transaction that they don't recognise and it's fraud blah blah blah.

90% of the time it turns out that they actually did do it but the merchant name was odd and they couldn't remember, or it was something they signed up to and didn't realise it was an ongoing payment, etc.

9% of the time it was a family member who had been using the card, usually online.

The remaining 1% of the time it's actually genuine fraud.

Moral of the story: you or someone with access to your card almost certainly did in fact make, or in some way initiate that transaction. I'm gonna guess it's a restaurant.

    • i agree, takeaways or restaurants have crazy sounding names on statements

It may have only shown up on the 21st on your statement, however it may have been charged up to 5 business days before that. It's probably a legitimate business, as others have said, something independently owned or similar. If you call your bank they will be able to tell you the charge date/time, and possibly give you more information about the origin of the charge.

Any chance of an update OP?

    • +2

Seconded! Can't help but be curious what it ended up being lol

      • +2

FWIW, OP's real name might be Craig Thompson… :p

…just remember this for the chargebacks: somebody broke in, took your CC, used it & ninja'd it back! ;)

    • Yep ops made a fool of himself. The charge was for $40 of petrol. Oh how could he forget

If you can manage it, buy distinctive amounts, e.g. on the 11th pump $40.11 of petrol. That might help tracking.

  • I think I found it!

    • It's all good now, it's from the restaurant din tai flung, thanks guys appreciated.

      • So was your meal you bought good?

from a website called "SANDHILL FIG INVESTM SYDNEY"

I'd avoid investing in Figs, put you money in Ostriches instead… There are some good ones based out of the Cayman Islands…
