Health Insurance - are you switching from HBF ? Seperate extras to hospital

Arrgghhhh just received my new payment amount per month from 1st April and its just getting ridiculous. Our family is with HBF here in WA and its definitely time to change. (Now going to be $205 a month family cover)

I have tried to go about switching previous times when they have bumped it up but I always get stuck when I compare the cover I have with other funds and it only saves me about $10-$15 a month, I have thought is it worth the effort to switch for a small saving ?

So was having a look around this morning and read a previous post about having hospital & extras with different companies. Is ths a good strategy ?

Also do you always choose a higher hospital excess to get a lower premium ? I have always had a low excess $100 for just in case, paying a $500 excess scares me a bit if something did happen.

And my extras cover that covers major dental, are the companies that offer the sort of package where you get $750 a year per extra and you can spend it on whatever (doesn't matter about the item number) good ?

As ypu can see im totally lost, ive only ever been with hbf and I really need to nip this now cause i want to save !!!!

  • You only pay $205 a month , that sounds good.

I'm with Medibank and i was paying $288 which has gone up to $312 for family cover.

Thats for Top Hospital and Extras 70 family cover.

I know its heaps but everytime I look around the others always have lower limits to claim so I guess it depends on whats important to you.

I didnt think about having seperate hospitala and extras cover but I will look at that now.

  • If you want to compare policies, you can use this calculator

    http://www.privatehealth.gov.au/dynamic/compare.aspx

  • Compare the difference in monthly cost between your 100 excess with that of 500. Then compare that difference to the extra 400 you'd pay when you go to hospital and how often you do so .

You might find you're paying a higher premium that is more expensive than if you just put the monthly savings in the bank and used it each time for the extra 400.

  • GMF Hospital cover (my extras are with Medibank) is definitely worth a look for WA people. One of the cheapest for medium cover and I was pleasantly surprised to not have to pay our $500 excess when my wife was admitted for day surgery. I've since found out that many of the majors charge the excess for day surgery.

    • Thanks, I ended up going with BUPA. Pretty sure I am getting a similar deal than what I was already on with HBF but upped my excess and reduced my payments per month.
