  • JB hi fi has it for $279.30

    price match for convenience?

    • For that little difference I'm sure you can get more of just by asking at jbhifi. Might have to but something… just don't get a hdmi cable.

  • Does anyone know of a relatively cheap receiver that supports multiple zones? Want to install speakers outside and around the house. Cheers

EDIT: 5.1 is sufficient for the home theater.
EDIT 2: I would be looking at least, 3 zones eg, rumpus, outside, bathroom.

Plenty do 2 zones, if you're looking at 3 zones though you're looking at mid/high end models. Are you looking for 5.1/2/2 for rumpus/outside/bathroom?

      • Yeah I think I may need to by some kind of splitter. 5.1/2/2 is ideally what I want.

Onkyo NR818 is the cheapest current Onkyo that will do 3 zones like you're after. Around $900 though.

        • Quite a bit out of budget, but thanks anyway.

        • If so, that's the best receiver under 1k by a country mile.

Most (some?) 7.1 channel receivers can do multiple zones (depends on brand).
      I have my Pioneer VSX827 set up for 5.1 + 2 outside.

      • I don't think I'm really fussed with brands. I am on a phone atm but can't find a reliable price for the VSX827. Sorry I'm knew to the whole home theater game. Do any brands mix and match in terms of single remotes or would I have to look down the lines of a Harmony remote. I know that Samsung have their anyconnect which allows a single remote with other Samung devices.

Not sure if you'll find a 827 anymore, that was last years model. All Pioneer amps end in 8 this year.

You've basically got 4 options for 'remote control' nowadays.

          1) you buy a universal remote like harmony etc. - most flexible

          2) you use the remote for your receiver, and look up the back of the instructions to find the brand/model of your tv and other equipment. - cheapest, if it satisfies all your needs.

          3) you hook everything together via HDMI and use the HDMI-CEC (samsung call theirs 'anynet+') magic. - i've struggled with this. It may be due to different brands, but it may just be limitations of the technology.

          4) just use the remote control apps on your smartphone!

        • 1) Do you have any experince on newer Harmony remotes? I bought a Harmony 720 back in the day, and the lag between remote and device was terrible like 1 to 2seconds.

          3) I am buying a Sony TV so it rules this out.

          4) Trying to look for a simple solution for the GF :)

          Thanks for all your advice!

        • I've still got a Harmony 600. None of the Harmony remotes should have lag when using a simple button like volume, channel, etc. There will always be a delay when pressing the activities buttons though, because the harmony has to send multiple different remote commands and wait in between them.
The newer software lets you change the wait periods, but you can only make it as fast as your equipment can receive.

HDMI-CEC sometimes works between brands, even though they're all called different names. The basics like power on, power off should work. Not sure about other things like play, volume, channels. I'd give it a try first, before ruling it out completely.

        • Great once again thanks for the insight it is much appreciated.

  • Anyone know the difference between the VSX-523 and the VSX-323? Both seem to be much the same, with the 323 being $35 cheaper.

  • Does it have standby HDMI pass-thru? I have the VSX522 and it does not.

MCACC is a bit of a gimmick (doesn't really work)

  • Price has changed to $278.30.
