IPv6 Is anyone actually waiting for this and why?

Basically I was thinking the other day what the heck I've been hearing for ages about how IPv6 is just around the corner and it will change everything. It reminds of the Y2K bug where there's a lot of hype and nothing happens. The grievances I've got with IPv4 are basically thus:

  1. All my games have had issues with NAT at one point or another, apparently with IPv6 every device would have it's own IP address (the last 64bits include the MAC)
  2. Port forwarding would be a thing of the past which I could not be happier about, it is always undocumented and yet necessary to get a game working well online. Let's face it, it's not unheard of for someone to be running two servers which require the same port from the same IP address… sigh
  3. Whenever I've wanted to host my own website, I've wanted a static IP for my .tk domain, again this would be solved by IPv6.

I'm certainly not holding my breath anymore. I've relegated myself to hoping developers just figure out a way for things to work on top of it (solutions such as Plug 'n Play for games, logmein which requires no port forwarding rather port opening by program to server, etc.)

So why does IPv4 annoy you and are you still holding your breath?

we know that the OS are ready, i guess the ISPs have to first adopt and roll out IPv6.

I believe some ISPs offer v6 already. But there won't be a flag day, v4 will coexist with v6 for a long time. So you'll have to put up with rest of the world using v4.

    UPnP
    NAT Traversal

Good ISPs offer them for free.

  • IPv6 will come more popular the closer you get to reaching capacity of IPv4, my view is that it's more of a necessity rather than something to look forward to really.
