Better off buying a TP-Link MR3020 which includes a USB port for 3G/4G connectivity with a USB dongle.

    • i dont see the point of that either

just get a myfi type device that puts everything in one package

      • It will also run ROOter http://ofmodemsandmen.com/

      • Will also allow you to connect a wired ethernet device to WiFi

      • Will also broadcast a WiFi network for you

  • These devices allow employees to send a rouge wifi signal off the company network??

I have no idea what this is. Does it just set up an isolated wifi network? Or does it connect to an external network and then operate as a hotspot? If so, does it have to be an ethernet connection to the 'WAN''or can it act as a wifi repeater, connecting to one wifi network (WAN) and then setting up its own (LAN)?

There's no information on the site or here to say what this actually does. Which is annoying as I may have a use for this kind of device.

I'm glad I got it the last time HN put these up on special for $9.

These aren't mifi or 3g devices. These are intended for you to connect to a hotel's wired network and make your own personal wireless hotspot. Some places offer wired connectivity but not wireless. I came across this a lot in Japan a couple of years ago.

    • Wired only hotel; a strategy to limit Internet usage to next to the tissue box?

    • Very rare these days, was in Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and Indonesia last year they all had free WiFi..

There's actually some hotels that charge for Wired and not WiFi interestingly.

      • China: all the hotels I stayed at have Ethernet only to the room. Some have wifi in the lobby but every man and his/stray dog were on it (slooooooooooow).

Additionally wifi AP in many hotels tend to be about as good as using a carrier pigeon with no wings and clubbed feet. Ethernet connections tend to be more reliable.

But yes I agree. Most modern hotels do now provide wifi (free or otherwise).
