  • Does only one person get a free suit whilst the others pay?

Those prices are EXTREMELY expensive for suits made in Thailand! If you and three friends want suits made, honestly you'd be better off measuring everybody and have one of you fly to Bangkok for a long weekend and have them all made in person, where they can see the quality of the suits and fit in person. Airfare + hotels + suits would be cheaper than this deal.

Airport magazines have ads where people come to your hotel and you can have FOUR tailor-made suits made within 24 hours for about $200. The most expensive tailor-made suit I could find in Bangkok, after searching many shopping districts, was about $280, and that was a tailor in the lobby of one of the largest 5-star hotels in the city. That was before I even tried to haggle, and my wife talked them down to $220 without even really trying.

My brother had some tailor-made suits made for the groomsmen at his wedding. He paid way too much, then found out they weren't making them locally, they were sending the details to Thailand. The suits arrived and were all very poor fitting. They were sent back, which took two weeks, and arrived with different coloured threads where the alterations were made. Still didn't fit well, nobody to yell at as a person just turned up to take his measurements, he didn't even have an address to visit. I can't find an address on this website.

    http://www.suitmeup.com.au/about/9/flawless-fit-guarantee

Their 'flawless fit guarantee' just refunds you money if the suit does not fit properly. That's not much use if you just spent $389 on a suit and get $40 back - you end up with a shitty looking suit you can't wear anywhere, and you threw $349 down the toilet.

I won't neg because maybe some people think it's worth a risk and don't want to find somewhere cheaper locally, or don't want to fly overseas for a bargain. But I'd seriously consider whether giving nearly $1,200 to a company without a shop presence is a good idea.

I dont think its a fair comment. There are two parts to the cost of a suit - materials and tailoring. You can pay low prices but you wont get quality. Not sure if the quality of these guys is really upto the mark or not but good quality suits cost more, even if you get it tailored overseas.

      • +2

You can pay low prices but you wont get quality.

Rubbish! Why are you on OzBargain if you think you can't get quality for low prices? My friend is a bank manager and has his suits made in Thailand, 4 for $200. He has more than a dozen of them now, picks up a new bunch every time he travels. They look fantastic. Nobody's ever said 'Wow, look at his cheap-ass suit'.

You can get suits for $60 in Thailand. Or you can spend $200 more to have nicer quality material - the labour cost will be the same. It really depends what you want to do with the suit and who you want to pretend to impress. I say pretend, because really, most people don't care what your suit looks like. Maybe it's a business advantage to have a smart looking suit for some careers, but for office workers it doesn't really matter.

        • jeez…ease up man…Your friend does not define the standard for all… each person has their own preferences and yes, I repeat, a good quality suit costs based on the material you use. You get heaps of different material and they cost different. Doesnt mean cheaper is bad but there is much more to clothing than simply superficial looks. Once again, I dont know what the quality is of these guys but to compare all suits to your $200 Thai suit is just plain stupid.

        • 'my friend is a bank manager, which means he only makes slightly more than the median wage and therefore totally knows about bespoke suiting'.

lol. worst attempt at namedropping ever.

Your friend's $50 suits are garbage. It hurts, but it's the truth. Sure, they might be better than a $200 Roger David suit, but they are still objectively terrible. The fact that you can't tell the difference doesn't automagically change this.

Your friend does not define the standard for all

I have three other friends working in large accounting firms who buy their suits from different places in Bangkok. One guy found a place that provides three suits and six shirts for $300. They fly over Asia regularly and stop off in Bangkok to have shirts and suits made. One of the main streets in Bangkok, Sukhumvit Rd, has hundreds of tailors, and many of them make great stuff. I lived in Bangkok for 8 months and spent a lot of time researching things like this.

to compare all suits to your $200 Thai suit is just plain stupid.

I'm not comparing all suits to $200 Thai suits. I'm comparing this deal, which is effectively four Made in Thailand suits for $1,167 with free postage, to four Made in Thailand $220 suits (that's the most expensive suit I could find in Bangkok after a little bargaining) for $880 plus international post. I appreciate that this company have done a lot of the footwork for you and probably found a very nice tailor who can make beautiful suits. But the website says this company basically take your measurements and send them to Bangkok, then they are sent direct to you from Bangkok. They even mention that you may have to pay GST when you collect your suits, if they are deemed by customs to be worth more than $1,000 (but it's refunded by PayPal).

If the deal was four Made in Australia suits for $1,167, things might be different.

I've seen people spend $1,200 dollars on suits made in Australia that don't look particularly nice and don't fit well. I also know people who buy $800 suits off the rack when there are 75% off sales, and they fit very well. Basing everything on price is meaningless. But this is OzBargain, not OzItalianSuit.com

          @jjcf

Your friend's $50 suits are garbage. It hurts, but it's the truth.

Who's it hurting? People regularly keep commenting on how nice his suits are, and ask where he bought them. I've been at clubs where random strangers ask where he bought his suit, and want the phone number and address. I found four tailors in Sukhumvit Road, Bangkok who actually have Italian suit makers working for them, who were trained in Italy. You can watch them make your suit if you like. That's better service than you'll get from most places in Sydney! The material is the same as what's sold in Australia, we import everything, same as Thailand.

The only reason people pay $800+ for a regular suit in Australia is because people are accustomed to paying more. Most companies that make suits off-the-rack for $600+ have them made overseas anyway, and guess what - they probably pay about $40 each, if that. My wife worked in a clothes export business for many years in Bangkok, so she knows what these things really cost.

lol. worst attempt at namedropping ever.

Namedropping? What name? No idea what you mean by that.

One of the main streets in Bangkok, Sukhumvit Rd, has hundreds of tailors, and many of them make great stuff. I lived in Bangkok for 8 months and spent a lot of time researching things like this.

Newsflash: all of the stores on Sukhumvit Rd are touts, and none of them do any actual cutting or stitching. There are very few real production tailors in BKK. The shops on Sukhumvit only grab your measurements (some don't even do that), and send them to their production tailor. Most of their job involves managing client expectations: encouraging the client beforehand, and explaining why the client didn't get exactly what they wanted afterward.

No, none of them have Italian suit makers working for them. That'd be far too expensive, but they'll happily tell that little fib to anyone who will listen.

And yes, sorry, those $50 suits look crappy. No two ways about it.

Greenie, would you kindly clarify that your brother did not buy his suits from us? It seems that inference could be drawn from your post, but I know we would not make such an error.

Secondly I would like to point out that part of our measuring service is a 100% fit guarantee. Ordinarily the flawless fit guarantee covers alterations up to $40 if a customer incorrectly measures him or herself. If we were to make an error, we will fix it at any cost or provide a replacement.

Similarly, any orders made at one of our fittings is 100% covered as any mistake we make is our own (although it's unlikely to occur).

      I hope this helps.

      Ross

      • Apologies for that, I will clarify my brother did NOT use your service.

  • $389 for a bespoke suit - bespoke or MTM? I presume at this price the 'bespoke suit' is fused?

  • +1

It can't be helpful that the advertisement directly below the deal is for a different suit company selling tailored suits at a lower price.

  • +3

Rep, what is the cost of this 'deal'? The thought of getting a free suit by just showing up with friends to get measured for suits is too good to be true. As part of the posting guidelines you are REQUIRED to clearly state all costs involved to getting this 'deal'.

  • Please put "Canberra ONLY" in the title.

  • Hi folks

I seem to have set off a bit of a firestorm here, so I'll do my best to answer your questions in turn.

Our suits are handmade with a half-canvas construction (men's - ladies are fused because you can't put canvas in a ladies' suit). We have never, in one year of operation, had any complaints about the quality of the suit - materials or manufacturing. We take great care on both of these points and I would suggest that any comparison to cheap 24-hour holiday suits is not warranted - it's apples and oranges.

'Canberra Only' is not in the title because this is a service we're about to launch in Sydney and Melbourne as well and accordingly we are taking expressions of interest from people in these cities.

The cost of the deal is dependent upon what your friends purchase. In order to be eligible for a free suit, you need to have 4 friends or colleagues purchase a suit. That is the point of this promotion and we have tried to be very open and explicit about that. We didn't intend to mislead anybody; we made the title as descriptive as possible to allow you to understand what the deal is without reading any further. I apologise for not doing better.

The purpose of this new service is to allay the concerns that some people (including in this thread) have about ordering tailored garments online. We understand that and are doing our best to help.

We post deals here because we value this community and hope that it will embrace what we have to offer. We are trying honestly to build our business and be a dependable, reputable face in the Australian marketplace. We always do the best for our customers and hope that you understand that this offer is posted in good faith and we will take on board all suggestions - as we do for every element of our business.

We understand that some might not think there is much value to this deal (as it does involve some organisation) but we know from experience that some people will find this a small price to pay for a free suit and we would like to respect those people by leaving it up here.

I welcome your continued involvement in the discussion as it's extremely valuable to us to receive all feedback.

Please feel free to contact me directly by PM if you would like any further questions answered; I may be able to reply quicker.

    Many thanks

    • I appreciate your reply, but you still haven't posted a full cost for this 'deal' which is actually a requirement of posting a deal. It's sounding more like a promotion without these details, not a deal.

Can you clarify, do you need four of your friends to purchase $389 suits, total cost $1,556, in order to get a free suit for yourself? So, is the deal five suits for $1,556?

What would happen if you want five suits just for yourself, would they cost $1,556 or $1,945?

      • For you, we will do five suits for $1556 :) But this is not the point of the deal; at its essence, we get to reach more customers and you get a free suit.

So yes, you are right. Four of your friends buy a suit, yours is free. It could, I suppose, be alternatively termed '20% off', except all you need to do is get 4 friends together and you don't have to touch your wallet. We don't want to wrongly characterise the offer, but we think it's a pretty good deal and we've had quite a bit of positive feedback so far.

        Hope this helps.

        Cheers
        Ross

Trading off 4 friends for a suit. You're definitely on the right website Sir!

    • haha that is one way to see it!

  • Can you confirm whether or not the suits are actually made in Australia? or are they just measured in australia and made in another country?

    • Hi - cool name.

Our suits are handmade in Bangkok, Thailand. We have a close relationship with our tailors and they're all extremely talented and experienced.

      Hope that helps.

      Cheers
      Ross

  • so 5 suits for $1556 (4x$389) = $311 each?
