I'm looking for a camera that takes good everyday photos (holiday/family) that can be operated with one hand preferably like a pistol grip shape. I have seen video cameras this shape which would be ok except I want good quality stills. Id it does both that is ok. Decent zoom like modern compacts would be good. Any suggestions? Price under $500.

Yeah. Not bad but still a bit cumbersome. A definite possibility if none of the video cameras take goos enough stills.
Why not grab a monopod? You can shoot with it collapsed for a pistol grip or expand it and rest on it for nonshaky stills.
