Web hosting - GoDaddy or something else

Hi guys and ozbargainers

just wish to get some idea about web hosting. Im planning to establish my own website and also my online sandbox. I am interested with the godaddy's plan but it makes me feel weird that there are rarely negative feedback about their stuff on internet. That looks like a success propaganda somehow. just want to know if you guys have any suggestion whether I should go with godaddy or you guys have something better?

Cheers
Peter

but it makes me feel weird that there are rarely negative feedback about their stuff on internet.

I'm really surprised you can find anything positive about godaddy on the internet. They are the used car dealers of web hosting & domain registration. There are tons of hosting companies about, if you must host with a domain register I would go with namecheap.

    • well.. have to say back to my homeland China, there are huge number of positive for godaddy… anyway I know there are tons of hosting companies, just wish to have some suggestion and thanks for yours:)

      • With my experience dealing with hosting community in China, I think the reason people have good experience there is because of their affiliate/referral bonus. People would say nice words to get their referral links out there. GoDaddy has certainly spent big on marketing - banner ads and affiliate programs to increase their customer base.

I'll say peacekeeper's suggestion on zuver is actually not a bad one.

  • There are heaps of web hosting deals — some here although OzBargain is probably not the best place comparing to forums such as WebHostingTalk's offer sections. There are heaps of better and cheaper providers out there than GoDaddy.

    • I checked all existing deals in ozbargains, but all of them seems expired… lolx maybe I am too lazy bone. I'll check the WebHostingTalk. Cheers!

I have a few sites hosted on www.zuver.net.au . Cheap and cheerful and apparently australian based server. Good support service as well.

  • What a nightmare trying to use GoDaddy - choose a hosting company that will offer you Cpanel and not their own cumbersome proprietary system. If you dont care about Australian hosting, just go hostgator :)

    • hostgator is Aus company or US? I am much prefer the Aussie company :)

  • Thanks guys, what do you guys stand on justhost and crazydomain?

    • Justhost is awful, Crazydomains are good deal right now for domains but their hosting plans are terrible, lots of customers complain about their sites going down for a few days with no support.

Hostgator is a US company and it is very good when it comes to service, price is reasonable but not the cheapest, but their service & support is the best.

  • Hostgator is US, and I have never used an Australian company with their level of support or service. I only have 1 reseller account remaining with them, as over the years Aus servers have come down in price and I mainly use them. But I have had an account for nearly 10 years (I think) with them, and they have never missed a beat. One of the hurricanes smashed several datacentres one year, and they still offered 24/7 support and posted photos of themselves working from hotel rooms.

I have had 1 serious issue with Crazy Domains a few years ago and never used them again, but they may have improved since then.

Never heard of Just Host. If you are this serious about exploring all hosting companies, then I suggest joing the WHT forums

  • It depends what you want from your host. I needed php, mysql, ssh, rsync, cron and unlimited bandwidth. I looked and looked and GoDaddy ended up the best choice for me a few years ago. I had a quick look-see about 2-3 months ago and did not spot anyone that would deliver all that at similar cost.

There are a few annoying things about GoDaddy hosting, which may be deal breakers for you. The servers are heavily firewalled and they don't make changes for individual customers, so if like me, you need your web app back end to regularly retrieve content via FTP, you will have to find alternatives.

Similarly, you have to use the GoDaddy SMTP relays to get any email out. This can be problematic because they will often end up being blacklisted on various RBLS, due to other customers spamming.

  • A lot of the times you get what you pay for, but paying more doesn't necessarily mean you'll get the best support and the best hosting. You'll also need to consider where you want to host the website, US providers/resellers can definitely offer better prices than any other country. but if you care about speed from Australia then go for Aus based.

  • I used to notice speed differences back in the days when you would get a ping of 300-400ms, especially on sites loading lots of files to display a page (like a wordpress site). However, advances in both latency speeds and also caching for CMS (wordpress, joomla, drupal etc) means that the difference is almost negligible. Having said that, for a few bucks more I always use local hosts as I am not looking for the cheapest host and I would rather support local companies

  • Thanks guys for all replies!

  • Go for netorigin… works best! it's also very cheap… going for about $42 for 2 years hosting or cheaper for longer periods (coupon for first invoice).

I have about 20 websites hosted with them. Really happy.
