The main 2 things I hate about Contiki is that they take to you to retailers who are often more expensive than other local stores, but pay Contiki a commission for each sale. The tour guide talks up the shop a lot to suck people into spending more money.
Then at the end of the trip, it is mandatory to give the tour guide and driver a big fat tip… That should be mentioned in the price…
I went on Contiki tours in 2010 and 2011 and both were 18-35, and a 'big fat tip' tip at the end was not mandatory all, it was just like in a restaurant or similar where you voluntarily tipped based on your experience of the service
Did Contiki in 1999. Ages were 18-35 back then. Tip was optional and can't recall "having" to go to any particular shops or outlet. Not sure where you're getting your info from JV.

You don't need to go to any of the retail shop. Most of the shopping time on the trip is your free time so you can go anywhere you like.
Tipping is also optional.
If you tip the guide if you feel they did a exceptional job. Otherwise you don't need to tip anything. It does say on their website and brochure that tipping is your choice.
Ah the Contiki memories. Do they have any singles tours for over 35 (not seniors)?
have they increased the age limit? didn't it used to be 30?
