Hi Guys, been looking for flights from syd to melbourne and cheapest is $180 with tiger. Why has the price of these flights gone up so much, is there a cheaper alternative (i have looked at training it but is is 12 hours and $90)
Why are domestic flights so expensive?

I don't know but if it's not urgent I'd just wait till next Monday or later. Sadly the only people I know who book and travel the same day or the next on budget airlines are often going to a funeral.
Tiger doesn't seem to be offering the cheapest flights anymore. Looks like Jetstar is the cheapest.
If you are willing to travel to Avalon, Adioso says its $58 roundtrip for most of May.
Via Melbourne airport, it's roughly $104 and up with the average around $140.
Why does Qantas make money on it's domestic, but not on it's international (when Joyce isn't stuff things up that is) ?
Basically, for all the talk of competition, there isn't really that much in Australia. The cheapo airlines have copied the extremely poor service levels of European cheapo efforts, but not the extremely low prices. That model relies on doing quick 'taxi service' type route, but the ones like that in Australia (including Melbourne <> sydney) are used to subsidise more costly journeys - even for the supposed 'low cost' airlines.
Even so, provided you can book enough ahead you should be able to find better costs than that.
